'The Pub' in Archbishop Street Valletta. The Pub is tiny, but as it was a cold breezy day there were plenty of seats to 'drink' in the atmosphere. The walls are covered in memorabilia, and Naval hat bands adorn the benches since it was a favourite watering hole for the British Navy. Its claim to fame is due to the actor Oliver Reed and has become something of a shrine to him. In the couple of hours we were there, six t-shirts were bought by fans... maybe not for his acting career as they were too young, but possibly by the quantity of alcohol he consumed in one afternoon, making him a legend!!
Back in 1999 Oliver Reed was filming Gladiator and enjoyed a tipple in The Pub. On the 2nd May during a break from shooting he spent the day pursuing his favourite activity... drinking! It's said that he consumed eight pints of lager 🍻 with his wife, friends and some of the film crew, followed by twelve doubles of rum 🥃 and half a bottle of whiskey whilst entering into an arm wrestling contest with some Naval crew from HMS Cumberland, and despite winning he paid for the whole round 💪
Unfortunately after imbibing such a large quantity of alcohol he suffered a major heart attack, and though an ambulance arrived within minutes it was impossible to revive him and he died on the way to the hospital. He was aged just 61 and according to one quote, his ambition in life was to drink every pub dry... well that was his attempt to drink The...

The Pub rather dines out on Reed's notoriety these days and the staff wear t-shirts emblazoned with his huge, and ultimately calamitous, last day's bar tally. The decor is a bit cheap and the huge array of Royal Navy emblems over the bar forewarn you of the clientele when an HMS is in dock. Having said all that, the staff are very nice, the selection of beers (especially on tap) is very impressive and the prices aren't a rip off. The music is ok (a bit on the heavy side when we were there) and the seats are numerous (if not very comfortable).
