Amazing Local Flavor and Unforgettable Food at Hijos Del Cocho!
We visited Hijos Del Cocho on the recommendation of Armando, our guide from the Bacalar DayTour, and we’re so grateful he sent us here! This restaurant was truly a gem, and it gave us an authentic taste of Bacalar’s vibrant food scene.
We started with the aqua chiles, and I have to say, the green sauce was out of this world! It was hands down the best I’ve ever had—perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice and flavor. Every bite was an explosion of fresh, tangy goodness. If you’re a fan of bold flavors, this dish is a must-try!
The tacos were equally spectacular. The tortillas were fresh, and each taco was packed with flavor and high-quality ingredients. You could tell the chefs put a lot of thought and love into every dish. Everything tasted so fresh and full of life, like it was made just for us.
The atmosphere at Hijos Del Cocho was casual and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a fantastic meal. The staff were warm and friendly, and the service was top-notch, which only added to the experience.
If you’re in Bacalar and looking for a local spot with unforgettable food, I highly recommend Hijos Del Cocho. The combination of great flavors, a laid-back vibe, and exceptional service makes it a must-visit restaurant. We left with full hearts and even...

We came in with high hopes for a nice evening, but it turned out to be a real disappointment. The drinks arrived unchilled – and that in warm weather. There was only a glass with ice cubes
The music was so loud, we could barely hold a conversation – louder than some nightclubs.
The food didn’t help either. The “shrimp cocktail” was just a few sad shrimp dumped in ketchup. The tacos tasted more like vinegar-soaked spring rolls than anything remotely Mexican. The chicken seemed like a mix of leftovers from the day before – dry and bland.
The octopus was not only insanely spicy, completely overpowering any real flavor – it also came in a strange marinade. On the side: a mountain of plain white rice drenched in sour cream. Add to that a portion of soggy, poorly fried fries – limp, undercooked, and completely unseasoned.
As if that wasn’t enough, there was a mop bucket placed right next to our table – which pretty much sums up the atmosphere.
The only bright spot: the waiter was genuinely kind and attentive. You could tell he was trying his best – too bad the rest of the place didn’t match his effort.
Bottom line: Unfortunately, a textbook example of a tourist trap. We strongly recommend looking elsewhere – there are definitely better options in the area. Don’t be fooled by the facade...
Read moreDelicious through and through- we had the carnitas de pulpo which come with a guacamole base and we’ve never had anything like it- couldn’t get enough. Then we had a mariscada mar y Tierra (serves 2, maybe 3) which came with fried fish, deviled shrimp, arrachera and chicken all paired with guac, carrot salad, beans and instead of green salad we substituted rice it was so amazing and exquisite but unfortunately it finished us and we were unable to finish the dish… All paired with a cochada (passion fruit, grapefruit and tropical fruit deliciousness)- I had vodka subbed but my partner had the original w/ Mezcal and we both were in tropical fruit heaven. To top it all off, Johnny had incredible...
