OK, I am revising what I wrote below, sort of. MY impression stands but when I read it to my son, he said I was wrong about his taco. He said the the Torerita steak taco was good. He said the meat and the pickled onions were "really good dad, change your review". OK, but he also didn't pay the bill. So I upped the place to 2 stars, 5 for my sons taco, mixed with a 1 for mine, a zero for the margarita and the –5 for the price.
Here is my original review.
Honestly, sometimes Google reviews just confuse me. How anyone can give this place 5 stars is just beyond me. Where to even begin. First of all the menu is as if someone watched top chef three times and thinks they are masters of gastronomy. Putting together mashed avocado, a few beet strips with blue cheese and sesame seed, or some chilli garlic mayo pork jowl (huh?) on a tortilla that tastes like a hockey puck had a love child with some cardboard, does not a master chef make. Or how about pork belly - read, just hunks of fat - in date mole. Date Mole?!? I think they meant to say, sweet glop. We also had a couple of oysters that I am pretty sure were harvested in the North Sea and shipped here about 6 months ago. My son literally gagged and he loves oysters.
Actually, I am being a bit, a little, tiny tiny bit unfair. The food was not inedible as my previous paragraph may indicate (except maybe that oyster). But it wasn't good. It wasn't wow, what a neat twist on a taco. I didn't walk away saying "Yum" (I actually walked away and found some street tacos just to remind us the world hadn't gone completely mad. Wash all this down (and believe me you are going to need something to wash it down) with a $11 margarita that couldn't win a margarita contest if the only other contestant was CostCo Kirkland brand premixed marg, and you got yourself a downright disappointing evening. The worst part was after two small and questionably devised tacos, one coke for my son, one pointless margarita, and a couple of oysters that seemed to have walked to Mexico on their own, the bill came to over 700 pesos. I mean seriously?!?
Hambrusia is emblematic of all that is wrong with the direction of Malecón restaurants these days. They are reaching for high end culinary, but for many the only thing high end about them is the price. You have...

We started our culinary journey with the Taco Tripulpo, a delightful surprise of octopus with tripitas. The unexpected combination delivered a burst of flavors that was both unique and satisfying. The presentation was impeccable, and the taste was simply excellent.
Next, we indulged in Mei Mei, featuring pork belly topped with a tantalizing mix of Teriyaki sauce, served on a delicate flower tortilla. This dish offered a fusion of flavors that delighted the palate, showcasing the chef's skill in blending different tastes into a harmonious dish.
For the main course, we savored their signature burger and fries. The meat was incredibly flavorful, complemented perfectly by the pesto and meticulously cut French fries that were crispy and delicious. Each bite was a testament to the chef's dedication to quality and taste.
Overall, La Ambrusia deserves a perfect score of 10 out of 10. The restaurant not only delivers on taste but also on presentation and ambiance. It's a place where every dish tells a story of creativity and passion for food. Highly recommended for anyone looking to explore unique flavors in a welcoming...
Read moreWe had our best ever Negroni here, made with Mexican gin. I recommend sticking to the menu drinks, when I went off script with a G&T I had to add pass it off for someone else to drink. Food was creative and well done. They are ingredient forward and good preparation. We had the pork belly and glass noodles. The pork was more like a grilled boneless chop. We had the yellowtail sushi which was hands down my favorite, delectable tuna, flavorful rice and dipping sauce. Other notable was the coffee flan. While it was nothing reminiscent to me of flan as a Miami Latina it was well done and seemed more like a moist cake than the rich eggy creamy texture of flan. The flavors were good and to keep the family peace left the savages to devour it while I looked on with my Negroni. Definitely dropping by on my last day for a Negroni and tuna...
