We rocked up in La Paz without a reservation, with a budget of about $25 per person. We visited a bunch of hotels: Yeneka, Lorimar, Miramar, Mediterrane, Posada and Pension California. They were all pretty similar. La Paz isn’t a tourist town so none of the rooms were cheap in a charming way—they were all cheap in a musty, functional way. Then we stumbled across Hotel Plaza Real where the room was a bit larger and brighter, with a balcony with (slightly obstructed) ocean views, in a nice plaza right on the beach, with good air-conditioning, hot water and a TV for 500 pesos (currently $40) for a double. Sold!||||The best thing about Plaza Real is that as well as being 30 seconds from the ocean, it’s also located along the most happenin’ part of the Malecon, one minute from the hippest bars and restaurants. Being a university town, La Paz has fantastic, young, diverse nightlife with almost no foreign tourists. We absolutely loved the city and this hotel was a perfect, basic base.||||After initially seeing a room on the first floor which reeked of stale cigarette smoke, we asked for a room on the top floor, which had better views and didn’t smell at all, presumably because fewer guests want to walk up three flights of stairs. For forty bucks, we were very happy... especially since nearby hotels right on the Malecon charge $100+. ||||Oh, and there's free street parking reserved specifically for hotel guests in an otherwise congested part of town.||||Overall in this price range, this is by far your best bet... if only for the location,...

Read moreThe hotel was fairly priced and it was very spacious. I like that it had a patio as well. I love hotels that have patios! It's located near the beach, restaurants and shopping. It is sits on top of two restaurant/bars so it can get very loud at night. If you are a light sleeper this is not the place for you. They were also doing construction on the beach so it was extremely noisy. Luckily my boyfriend and I are not light sleepers. The hotel does not have parking. The parking that is right next door to the hotel is not the designated parking area. The hotel will give you a discount parking voucher to use the parking garage on the other side of the street less than a block away. In all I feel it was an ideal place to stay if you want to be...
