Mikado is conveniently situated just outside the main entrance of the Marriott Cancun Hotel. If you are staying at the adjoined JW Marriott Hotel, you can walk through a few hallways and a corridor to reach the restaurant. We made reservations far in advance, because we wanted to try Mikdo’s hibachi experience. When we arrived, we were told that they only seat for hibachi at the start of each hour. Our reservation was at 7:15 p.m. so we decided not to wait another 45 minutes, and instead sit and eat at one of the tables in the other part of their dining room (technically called Kasai Izakaya). Mikado offers a lot of the staple Japanese foods and drinks you’ll find almost anywhere – sushi, sashimi, teppan-yaki (hibachi), sake, and beers. They provide oshibori (wet hand towel to clean your hands before eating), so I got a little excited.
We ordered edamame, seaweed salad, yaki udon, and a chef’s specialty steamed pork and vegetable dish. I have spent a lot of time in Japan, so I know not to have high expectations for Japanese food outside of Japan. However, we weren’t impressed with the quality of the items on any level, and everything either lacked flavor or had an imbalance of flavors. The pork that was a part of the chef’s specialty steamed dish consisted of a few strips of bacon. I was extremely upset when I saw that the featured pork cut was bacon, and only two measly slim strips. Since it was a date night meal, I didn’t want to cause a scene, so I held my tongue. I really felt embarrassed since I recommended we eat here.
The noise from the hibachi area was overwhelmingly loud, and routine outbursts were making their way to us all night. Kids were running through the restaurant bumping into tables. Service was slow, and that may be due to the fact that they were all running in and out of the hibachi section. I can’t comment on the hibachi, but I know we won’t try the restaurant again next time we’re in Cancun. For the price, it should have been a much better meal. I’d highly recommend that anyone going here for hibachi, ask for specifics on hibachi start times when making a reservation. The restaurant should really post that information directly on their website. Additionally, their menu online did not match the menu we were given in the restaurant. We left very disappointed, and I felt bad for having wasted one of our dinner meals on such...
Read morelocated at the Marriot Hotel in Cancun, this restaurant is promising. The entrance looks amazing with tall doors and the receptionist dressed up with Japanese Kimono's. As you walk in, the place is astonishing but the night we went was a bit smokey (ventilation issues).
Nice set of Hibachi tables and some of the chefs are pretty decent, some dropped knives in front of you ( not safe at all) Well our food was pretty normal for hibachi, i was expecting them serving you food to your mouth as in other places or pour alcohol etc, the regular flare but nope, here is the chef making a heart with egg white and setting an onion on fire. Thats all you get.
We ordered two surf and turf, salmon and chicken and the best was the marinated chicken and it was not cooked at the table. We also ordered spicy tuna rolls and they were actually pretty good.
Our waiter was all over the place and kept forgetting to take orders, deliver the orders etc. Pushing on the bottle water but no need for that specially when they dont even ask you if...
Read moreMy partner and I originally wanted to sit at the teppanyaki (think Benihana style) restaurant but it was full. We ended up sitting in the sushi part of the restaurant and it was excellent! The hostess let us know that we could also order from the teppanyaki menu which we ended up doing.
First off, our server Rodrigo was extremely personable and friendly. Loved his recommendation for the raspberry mojito and the choose two teppanyaki menu (we ordered the ribeye and tuna). The Marriott sushi roll was also excellent and well-seasoned.
The family sitting next to us order the ramen and didn't like it. Rodrigo was very professional in his approach with them to rectify the situation. I have to give him kudos for handling the situation with grace.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone staying at...
