Figured I’d try some Asian food to change things up from all the Mexican I’ve been having this past week. Willingly walked in, wasn’t convinced by anyone standing out front. Generous pour of the sparkling. I ordered the pad Thai with chicken. Asked about a spice level and was told it doesn’t come with spice. What I got was a massive bowl of mushy, overcooked noodles drenched in some type of sweet chili (I almost want to say tomato) sauce. Some onions, some bell peppers, a couple pieces of chicken. Maybe at most half of a scrambled egg. Not even close to what pad Thai is supposed to be. $16 USD / $320 MXN for a bowl of mush. Very disappointed with my meal. The live music was nice, but being borderline harassed by the performers asking for tips every 20 min or so was quite off putting. I wasn’t even recording or watching them, let alone even facing in that direction. Especially when I was trying to pay my bill, coming over and specifically asking for money (this was the third time during my visit) “since you already have it out”. If this was my only option for my last meal, I’d choose to starve instead.

DINNER REVIEW This is an Asian restaurant along the main strip in Isla Mujeres run by a cute American couple that loved it here and wanted to start a restaurant here. This place has everything from Chinese to Sushi to Mexican and I typically don’t like places that don’t specialize in a single thing. My inclination was mostly correct here. For appetizers, we had the chicken satay and spring rolls with chicken. The chicken satay wasn’t too dry and the peanut sauce it came with was good but the spring rolls were very large/thick and kind of fell apart as you ate them. It was also mostly lettuce in there which just felt like a salad in roll form. The sauce it came with saved it though. My mom and I shared the Ginger Garlic Shrimp and the Fish with garlic and lime. The ginger garlic shrimp was delicious and full of flavor but the fish with garlic and lime was bland. Would definitely get the former, not the latter. I would consider coming back here because I love the couple and had some good dishes but would go back other places first

A new dessert item that hadn't even hit the menus yet- fried ice cream. Oh my yumminess! Ginger ice cream in a delicious fried dough with raspberry sauce and blueberries. Ask for a second plate because it comes in two parts and if you're sharing, you'll each want one part on your own plate. You might find yourself licking the plate clean! It's THAT good. Of course the usual items we get are still great. Dragon roll, pork fried rice, steamed dumplings, crispy egg rolls, lion fish, coconut shrimp, ceviche made to order. I could go on... The staff has been with Annelise and Peter for such a long time, and they all are so nice. Julio saw us dining at Cubanos next door one night and came over to our table to say buenos noches. Such a sweetie. Stop in to watch the sushi maker right up front. He puts out some fabulous looking dishes, and gets happy when caught being watched. Bonuses are real napkins and toothpicks. We are sitting between 2 & 3 stars but settled a 2 because of 3 bad dishes. The staffs good service could not make up for it.

We had the fresh spring rolls that came out stuffed with lettuce/ cabbage some carrot and cucumbers- nothing else. We sent it back and they did not have the normal remaining ingredients so it turns out if they do not have the items for things they will send it out anyway and hope no one notices.

Second dish was Shrimp Singapore noodles that was to have an Indian curry with vegetables and other seasonings. The shrimp were very good… but the noodles tasted as they were just cooked in water and put in the dish with no flavor at all.

The chicken and vegetables was the next dish and the vegetables tasted good but the chicken was so bad that all 3 of us that tasted it spit it out.

The dragon roll was pretty good and a fun presentation.

Sushi was served with long grain non sushi rice and they originally gave us a lime weird sauce for the sushi instead of soy sauce (that we had to ask for)

Being in Mexico I see they are trying but other than the sautéed shrimp / shrimp tempura that anyone in the country can make everything else was very sub par

The staff did remove the bad meals from the bill but the experience and food...

Food is almost average. Nothing exceptional. The owner appears to be delusional and thinks his restaurant is the most amazing place on Isla mujeres, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong, as you can see by his replies to the other comments.

Besides that, he is extremely rude and told us he would charge us anyway after we sent back a dish that wasn't good, since he can't seem to take any criticism. He literally made us explain why we didn't like it. We'll, since he asked, the stir fry was served lukewarm, was basically a huge pile of mushy noodles in a pool of tastless sauce , sprinked with vegetables that probably came from a can (baby corn)

I'm sure he'll write a lengthy reply as to why I'm wrong and the food indeed was good. I would suggest he spend his time learning from the bad reviews and improving his restaurant, then obesessively replying to everyone that his food gets "rave reviews" therefore it can't be possible that it was bad.

Not to mention the horrible service - waiters just come to plop the food down, barely make eye contact and walking away. We waited 15 minutes to get someone's attention and when no one would even look in our direction ended up giving up and calling a waiter ourselves.

You're better off just going...

Recommended by our charter captain. Very nice American couple run this. We handed them our fish and sat down. Asked for charred......they had no charcoal grill......was told a cast iron skillet. We wanted the fish charcoaled with melted butter, salt, pepper........simple request right? Asked for Sushi and it was ok......as how can you mess that up? Except to charge the same thing as if you didn't hand them the fish.... For the main course she said they would blacken, do an encrusted, etc. Fish came out unfit to eat. My son said nothing but did not eat. Basically steamed one way. Blackened was steamed them rolled in herbs. What? Bottom line it's a tourist trap. We had 10 margaritas, rice, carrots(1 cut up) and 6 egg rolls. About $10 in costs/net of drinks.... The bill was $150. Outrageous. When called out on this the gentlemen owner said "we deduct for the cost of the fish"......which is almost nothing. I should have asked before sitting down as the rest of our party does whatever the boat captain suggests.....and my son and I do not. But we didn't ask what was the charge to cook the fish........so each of the meals was almost full price. Lesson learned. Recommend you keep on...
