We had a wonderful day at the Mayan Beach Club! Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted and given comfortable lounge chairs with nice pillows and umbrellas for a minimum spend of $600 pesos, which we happily accepted. It’s also very easy to do with their prices. We enjoyed several refreshing drinks, delicious food of fish & chips, Caribbean Salad, nachos tuna tostadas, lemon pepper fries etc and some relaxing time in the water. Our server, Christopher, was attentive and friendly, enhancing our experience.
However, our time there came to an abrupt end. As we were swimming, we noticed the staff beginning to remove our umbrellas and tables, and they even started moving our personal items. Christopher approached us at around 4:45 p.m. to inform us that he would be bringing the check as they needed to prepare for dinner. It was surprising, especially since we could have easily stayed another hour or more to enjoy the beach and lounge chairs.
I understand that they need to transition to dinner service, but it would have been nice to have a heads-up much earlier in the day. I can't imagine they have a significant dinner demand before 6:30 or 7 p.m., so adjusting the schedule to accommodate beach guests would definitely improve the experience.
Martin, a manager, kindly approached us while we were packing up and apologized for the oversight, which was much appreciated.
Overall, we had a great day, but it ended quite prematurely for our liking. We would love to return, but we hope to enjoy the full duration of our...
Read moreBeware. We were ripped off pretty bad here and it was very sad because we had such a great experience on a prior visit over the summer. Our 2 drinks (1 each) cost over $80 USD. When we got the bill there was definitely a shock because they had charged us for patron -I guess you have to specify if you don't want top shelf liquor or they will charge you for it so whatever you do don't just order a "margarita" or you a screwed. ON TOP OF THAT they also had charged us for an extra shot that we never ordered and they insisted belonged in my drink. Our waiter either did not, or pretended not to speak any english and kept insisting that I pour it in my drink. I was clearly confused and told him that I didn't want a shot and even pushed it over to my boyfriend because I thought they were giving it to us. The waiter pushed it back in front of me and he was persistent and motioning for me to pour it in my drink. Eventually I gave in and just thought since my margarita was strawberry (my boyfriend's was regular) maybe I needed to pour it in myself instead of it coming mixed in. The soup I ordered when we came here in the summer was fantastic and had come out in a whole display of shrimp and tomatoes- Shrimp Crema- where you mix the soup in with the ingredients at your table. This time around the soup came out combined, with different vegetables in it, no tomatoes at all and COLD. 1 bowl of soup (245 pesos)- 3 tacos (200 pesos) and 2 insanely priced margaritas wound up being $110 USD (1875 pesos)....
Read moreWe enjoyed Playa Norte from Mayan Beach club. Like many reviewers mentioned, cost is 100 pesos per chair but minimum order per person is 300 pesos.
Pros: It’s pretty easy to consume 300 pesos just in drinks. Our server (I won’t name him for reasons under) was very easy going and fun. Food was good and in large portion.
Cons: Drinks are not that strong, and portions are tiny. For the same price (about 145 pesos for cocktails) I can get a way bigger and stronger drink at other bars. If you don’t mind weaker drinks, shouldn’t be an issue. After noon, the place gets very busy and service gets delayed. Tip % was somewhat forced on us and the server insisted that we leave a bigger tip even though we had tipped enough in our opinion. Wifi is very slow and spotty.
Overall it was a good one time experience, and if I really really wanted to rent a chair at Playa Norte I wouldn’t mind visiting this place again. I don’t regret it, but I do feel like I spent more than what I experienced. I will also say that I ended up not going with the beach chair route ever again during my week long stay at Isla and just opted to sit with a beach towel under the palm tree with bigger and stronger drinks that I got...
