Azafrán is a restaurant I’ve visited many times, but this is my first review. The experience was quiet and relaxing, helped by the off-season atmosphere, with just one family dining. Service was excellent: attentive without being intrusive.
I started with the grilled shrimp appetizer, served in Azafrán’s signature saffron butter over jícama carpaccio with herb gremolata and radish. The shrimp were lightly charred and balanced beautifully with the richness of the butter and the brightness of the herbs. A subtle heat in the sauce made it even more engaging. It paired surprisingly well with a glass of Tempranillo-based red blend from Baja.
The main course, sea bass “Finkenwerder Art”, arrived over risotto with bacon, mushrooms, green onions, and chunks of shrimp in a white wine ragout. The fish was well-cooked with a soft, delicate skin, though I found myself wishing for just a bit more seasoning. That said, the dish really came alive when all the ingredients came together in one bite. The shrimp may have even been intended as a textural stand-in for gnocchi. At any rate, given how much I love shrimp, it was a great surprise!
Dessert was two scoops of homemade ice cream: one vanilla and one saffron. The vanilla was unexpectedly rich and buttery, even outshining the saffron in flavor. But together, they balanced each other.
Azafrán is always a must-do stop when I visit Puerto Vallarta. I’m guaranteed a great...
Read moreThis fine dining restaurant deserved to be mentioned . Nick and Manager Ever were very accommodating throughout the meal. Their alcohol list were extensive . I ordered, the Cab, Malbec and sparkling wine . All were very good. For the main course , I chose the nut crusted Mexican beef with Cauliflower purée and vegetables. The meat was cooked “medium” as requested. Mexican meat was on the tougher side, but still good. Next was dessert. I opted for the Grandma style apple beignets with vanilla ice cream. The beignet was cooked perfect . Nice and crispy on the outside. The apple on the inside was hard and needed to be poached longer. I really enjoyed my experience at Azafran. I’m looking forward to another visit.

Another great dining experience . Nick and staff were very accommodating. I ordered the Pre-Fix(Restaurant week 9/15-10/10) meal which had three choices each for app, main and dessert. Mango, avocado with sauté shrimp: Nice blend of creamy, sweet and savory. The combination was a hit Short ribs with vegetables and potato purée : short ribs were flavorful. It could’ve used a longer braising time so the meat can be more tender. Lava cake with vanilla ice cream: Cake was rich and delicious . Nice and artfully decorated.
Paired nicely with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nicely done
