Learn moreMaybe it's because of those carb-watching types who probably make up a large percentage of the clientele here, that tortillas aren't automatically put on the table with your breakfast.... but should I also have to ask 4 times before I get them??(at which point my breakfast was barely lukewarm.). This is why I took no photos because I was so appalled that I had to wait, ask, wait ask... for TORTILLAS! I ordered the soupy huevos rancheros which came in a bowl to accommodate the well of what was essentially caldo de jitomate (tomato soup). Hoja Santa, which is my favorite herb, was named as a key ingredient in the breakfast. I strained to detect a hint of it and failed. I finally asked the server where the Hoja santa was to be found, only to be told that this herb was merely infused into the sauce. It's like having a coconut curry infused with basil...NO! You want the nice, bright flavor of the herb actually in the dish. Come on! So essentially, 2 eggs in a sloppy tomato sauce without any picante and no flavor of the herb that is implied to be a key ingredient. My breakfast companion had a tamal de alcachofa (artichoke tamal) which he said was fine... He runs a major international food and culture site, so this was a major fail. And the coffee? Dreadful. Why did I give it 3 stars? Because if you are looking to spend too much for ordinary food, you'll be pleased. I'm going back to Doña...
Read moreThe coffee was good but except for that, all other breakfast options we ordered were extremely overpriced, disappointing, flat and flavorless. We went because of the amazing experience we had at Pujol a few years ago ( from same chef Enrique Olvera), we left regretting badly this was the place we chose for our last breakfast on our yearly visit to Mexico City. Any food stall of any corner, or any unpretentious little restaurant in la Roma has better Mexican food than this place, which gave us the impression of having a pretty shell with a big name but no strong content behind it. People working there were attentive and caring, but stressed. The music, like in many restaurants in Mx City except a few, was way too loud, it prevents people from having meaningful conversations. This place requires its creator’s presence, lots of opportunities for it to grow and improve. Never planning to go back and never recommending to any of our friends in Mx or Europe. B t w : I am Mexican and Swiss, an avid cook myself and I know what I am talking about here.
Our food journey had a happy end, we had lunch at another place which completely healed our disappointed heart, belly and filled our mouth with joy! (read my reviews...
Read moreWe visited this restaurant a couple of times, the first time was better than the second, perhaps because the first time was during the week, the second on a Saturday so it was busier. Claudia was our service both times and the first time she took her time to give us good service while the second not so much. The food was good, the chilaquiles were great, crunchy and flavorful. The late was good, the cafe de olla was better, I think, a bit sweet but with a nice taste of cinnamon and citrus from the orange peel. The Concha de maiz came in warm and I suggest you try it, the chocolatin was also nice and soft inside while crunchy outside. I also liked the torta de huevo con chorizo, it also came with chips. The food was delivered fast to our table, it is nice to seat outside but sometimes people come around selling things or asking for money so just take that in consideration. The first time the music was the Beatles the second was mostly soft romantic Spanish music. I think it was a good vibe, nice and simple decor. I will consider coming back...
