This is possibly one of the best, affordable, and authentic Chinese restaurants in Mexico City. It is placed right in the core of Chinatown, it opens early for lunch (noon), which is not always the case for many restaurants in the area. I am vegan, and I've always found suitable options, I have been visiting this place since the 1990s. Tofu with Chinese mushrooms and vegetables is my top choice, it's otherworldly, add a bowl of steamed jasmine rice for extra bliss ... other vegan options are available or some dishes may be adapted to vegan versions, just be careful to specify that Oyster sauce or other animal-based ingredients are avoided when preparing your dish. The array of cocktails is quite interesting and original, there are new dishes in the menu, which include Asian fusion, and an interesting vegetarian/vegan maki I have not tried yet (I always fall for the tofu). My non-vegan friends keep praising seafood dishes in Hong King, especially those with squid, but I have no say in that. As it comes to desserts, I have only tried the almond cookies with tea, and I keep ordering them, simply yummy. Service is formal and attentive, sometimes waiters are literally running around in rush times, but they are always polite and ready to help. I guess there is a good administrator or maitre d' pulling some strings to ensure quality control, because you get your food swiftly, and everything runs smoothly. The ambiance is friendly, informal, with lots of Chinese decor all over, the background music is a peculiar mix of pop hits, both contemporary and oldies, not too loud, and...
Read morePros: nice decor, efficient and nice staff, menu in both English and Spanish. Con: we ordered 3 different dishes (fried rice, Mongolian beef, and vegetable & tofu). I’m from San Francisco, California so I can tell they’re not authentic Chinese food but that’s fine as long as the food tastes good. The problem is all 3 dishes came out spoiled and partially cold. It’s so obvious they were not cooked fresh or cooked upon order. The fried rice was hard and barely warm, like it was microwaved but not all the way. The other 2 dishes tasted spoiled. Most people didn’t notice food was spoiled, but I run a restaurant back home and we taste test our food to ensure quality and freshness. It’s the kind of spoil resulted from food sitting out too long or microwaved over and over again. You can also see a microwave on the counter by the restroom of upper floor, 10+ dishes sitting on that counter, and staff was seen popping food in that microwave on my way to the restroom. In the end, I had only 1 bite of each and 2 beers. Was afraid of food poisoning on my trip so didn’t eat the rest. Came in hungry and left hungry. Staff didn’t charge for one of the spoiled dishes, and I didn’t even bother complaining about the other dish since clearly every dish is made with the microwave, no point of asking for replacement. They also added tip to the bill; 10% mandatory tip.
Overall, the restaurant owner needs to change operation motto and stop pumping out microwaved, spoiled food for public...
Read moreIt was my fifth time visiting Mexico City in less than a year and this is the first time that I asked my local host to take me to China town. It was more nostalgic than anything, I managed my expectation to start with. It was quite an interesting experience at Hong King. The Chinatown, or Chinatown Street, was merely two small connected street of about 100 meters long, with some restaurants scattered around. When we arrived at about 8:50PM, every restaurant except one was already closed, it was a Monday night after all. So we had limited choices. Hong King was suppose to close at 9, but as the owner sees new patrons walk in , he gladly welcomed us and have chef re-opened the stove. The dishes we ordered were Fish with bean sprouts, spicy cabbage, BBQ platter, fried eggplant, bean sauce prawns, and according to my local host, an original Chinese dish from Mexico, Chak SuI (杂碎), basically a mixture of meats and veggies, it was not bad actually.
Overall a nice experience at the Chinatown, but I would say there are definitely other better Chinese restaurants out there, maybe not in Chinatown.
🍡Must order🍡
The Mexican original Chinese dish: Chak Sui? 杂碎
the spicy cabbage if you dare to eat spicy
fried green pepper: super spicy and will give you trouble next morning if you venture to try
