Tio Pepe's is a unique experience. With perhaps one exception, it is the only historic camtina in downtown Mexico City that has not recently closed or become an expensive tourist trap. What makes it special is the original charm. Opened at the end of the French Empire in Mexico, it features the original beautiful wood bar back and ornate ceilings. The bar back itself is a uniqre historical artifact, Imported from France, it was probably a year or more in transet. There are only a handful of these in original condition anywhere in the Americas. What a great place to have a cold beer and become part of history. There is a full bar with a good selection of distilled beverages, mixed drinks and national beers. Good food is available in afternoons from a nearby restaurant. The place is relatively small with booths and a few indoor and out door tables. Located at what is now the north end of China Town, it is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. Is is one of my regular stops whenever I visit Mexico City.

Immortalized by William S. Burroughs on it's book 《Junkie》and 《Queer》this is by far one of the best and oldest bars in downtown, if your looking for an old school bar experience. The sensation of decay and ancient spirits playing along with your drink will make you feel in another century; a journey through time if you share the ambition of finding beauty in broken places. Not expensive but not exactly that cheap, for 10 dollars or less (depending on your alcoholic scholarship) you might as well get drunk and isolated from the external chaotic street. Nowadays it's impossible to find opium smokers or drug dealers on the surroundings (at least with sun light) but if you get into the attention of details, you might notice this is the place where the dilated anus of Seward Burroughs sit down in the early 50's, and even, if you go directly to the bathroom, that's where he let his golden piss flow. The waiters are polite and take care about the service they've been offering for several years.

Horrible servicio.

Tio Pepe provided one of the warmest cantinas to grab a drink through their great service and souvenir filled historic atmosphere. To think that this cantina once banned women and children and was a meeting point for gangs in the early 20th century is just so interesting to imagine as you sip on some mezcal with a delicious housemade sangrita. The bartenders were attentive and friendly, even allowing us to take a picture behind the bar! Tucked away in the heart of Chinatown, Tio Pepe sits, ready to transport their guests...
