We got so stuffed after eating carb and protein rich dishes day after day and needed something a bit more on the lighter side. I love Mexican food and can eat practically every variety that the city offers but wanted to see what creative fusions existed in DF as we know there are a ton of awesome chefs that experiment with different things in this town.
There are plenty of Asian eateries in DF and we decided to find a spot that specialized in something that had a Mexican twist to it. Mog popped up and after reading the reviews and looking at all the tasty pics, we immediately Ubered over.
It was pretty packed despite being nearly 10pm on a Sunday night. And we saw a handful of Asians (both local and tourist) eating there so that was a good sign.
They've got practically everything from pho to ramen to wonton, Thai style noodles and even Malay/Singaporean laksa!
The menu did a great job appealing to Mexican palates. When you read the Spanish description of each dish, it couldn't have been done better. Definitely made each dish sounded more hip and the thing to order after reading it (much better than the typical broken English and/or literal google translation ones you see here in the states at Asian joints).
Right when we sat down at the bar, they served as complimentary hamachi. We used this as a gauge on whether to try out some of their nigiri or sashimi items or not and surprisingly it was damn fresh.
We went with a combo of their yakatori skewers, Tom Yum ramen (never saw this Thai/Jap fusion before, even stateside) and seared toro. The skewers were on par with the ones you'd find at any good Izakaya in Japan or the states. The liver and heart were cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth that I'm still drooling as I'm writing this.
The Tom Yum ramen was just alright. It was palatable though the flavors didn't really blend together too well. It appeared to be just the regular ramen broth base (tonkotsu I believe), just with the addition of the typical Tom Yum base ingredients to bring out the tangy spice flavors. The ramen noodles itself were cooked well and the shrimp was also quite fresh. Nothing to yelp about but also wasn't terrible.
The seared toro was heavenly though. It was super fresh and the searing was just right. It had a nice char to the outside and the inside was still rich and full of fish belly fatness (nomnomnom).
We washed all of this down with a sake (served traditionally in a wooden box cup) and an adult version of Thai Tea. The Thai Tea was a concoction of rum, chocolate and milk (along with cinnamon too if I can recall). This hit the damn spot and was perfectly crafted with just the right amount of everything. Not too liquor heavy, right amount of milk and not overly sweet.
You know dinner isn't complete without some type of sugary delights. So we went with one of their matcha crepe cakes. Not too many places can do it right and theirs was decent. Not Lady M quality but the layers were even and it was a good blend of cream and crepe layers that you weren't being overwhelmed by one flavor or texture.
If you're looking to take a break from all the Mexican grub, DF definitely has a whole diversity of different cuisines and you can't go...
Read moreI don’t understand the hype. The restaurant was not cute, the vibe was not good, and the food was not anything special. I got something entirely different than what I ordered, the spicy bara chirashi. The menu doesn’t mention it includes hard, rubbery octopus and it’s covered in 3 tablespoons of salmon roe. Those ingredients aren’t even in the description… after scraping them off, the remaining salmon and rice was meh. The hostess was just awful. I get that it was busy because of a holiday, but she was rude, so quiet she couldn’t be heard, and couldn’t manage the flow. We put our name down for a table and she said 50 min. We went across the street to get a drink and checked back at 30 min just in case. She said it would be “11 more tables”. Is that a unit of time? Ummm? When pressed she said 20 more min, so we got our bill across the street and came back to be seated. But she rudely told us she called our table ten minutes ago and we weren’t here, so she gave our table away. Meanwhile there were four empty tables… The menu was unbelievably hard to order from. They don’t have a hard copy menu, QR code to scan, or even a website. They literally shared a link to a PDF menu on google drive! It was not mobile responsive and was dozens of pages long. There were far too many options and hard to zoom in and out without losing your place. If you feel like reading a thesis on your phone instead of spending time with your friends you came to dine with, then this might be a good system. The service was extremely slow- we weren’t even approached for 30 min despite trying to flag down a server. Would not recommend at all. There are SO MANY better places to...
Read moreGood, sometimes even great food.
I have lived in the area for months and, until very recently, this was my go-to place for non-Mexican food and showing people from out of town that it wasn't all about tacos. Never had anything here that didn't taste fantastic. The atmosphere is lively [although skip the uncomfortable upstairs "dining" area if possible].
But the last few times, the service has been pretty bad - forgetting things I know I ordered, bringing the same thing twice [and trying to charge me for it], needing to wait for food you never put in to the kitchen for, etermally long waits for second drinks or the check after I have requested it.
Tonight took the cake. When I leave you a less than satisfactory tip, please do not come back to my table [in front of my guests] and ask me if I was sure it was right. Perhaps instead, slink back to the same corner you were all three times I needed to get up to ask for something else and think about why people tip you in the first place. You are a server; your job is to make sure my experience is pleasant and to make sure I have things I need or want - not to lean againt the cash register. or bar. You get paid to do that job; you get a tip for doing it well. Also, its not really hard to just check back, at least once after the food comes, to see if you would like anything else.
I am certain there are places in the neighborhood where the food might be a little bit less tasty but I won't feel treated like an...
