tl;dr: 1st experience: incredible dishes (almost no misses), wonderful, above-and-beyond service, poor pacing 2nd experience: mostly static menu, the changes that were made to dishes we previously liked were neutral at best or negative at worst, off-balanced service/missed opportunities, still poor pacing
UPDATE: 2nd visit: we initially came here to celebrate the engagement of our two friends, so after my partner and I got engaged and had her parents in town to visit/celebrate, we thought this would be the perfect place!
When we initially arrived for our reservation, the power was out. The server let us know we could sit and order drinks but was unsure when it'd be possible to order food.
Not a problem at all as the drinks were a huge reason we wanted to return. After the stellar service we'd had our first visit, I was a little surprised that our server didn't offer us anything to make up for the inconvenience of the power being out and being unable to order food. Honestly, not a big deal.
The power came on shortly thereafter and we had a good idea of what we wanted to order as we wanted to mostly reorder favorites from our first visit.
While the chilacayote asado and portobello marinado were both tasty and how we remembered, the tartar de habas was odd. The first time the fish had been the star of the show. This time it was muted and the dish was sweet.
Like the first time, there were pacing issues. We ordered three entradas and one "main" and all four dishes came out all at once. This was odd the first time, and I should have remembered to stagger my order to avoid it this time.
While most of the food and drinks were good this second visit, the meal felt very flat compared to our first visit. There was no mention of our engagement celebration and no pleasant surprises like our first visit.
CDMX Eats 2024 #5: 1st visit: we initially ate here as a party of six for an engagement dinner/celebration on a Saturday in January (2024). While most of us had heard about Mux and been excited to dine here, none of us really knew what to expect.
Our waitress, Leslie, did a great job of familiarizing us with the menu. We started off with a round of (delicious!) cocktails, and everyone really enjoyed their drinks. The cocktails my partner and I initially ordered ended up being unavailable, so Leslie kindly offered us each a free shot of mezcal to make up for it. Totally unexpected and the kind of above-and-beyond service you can only hope for.
We ordered 3 apps/entradas and 4 mains. Our group heavily preferred the apps (chilacayota asada, (tuna) tartar de habas, ensalada portobello quesillo salad*) to mains (would pass on their moles, enchiladas, and chicken mezcal dish; though the pozole was a standout!)--what's new?
Midway through our meal, Leslie had asked if we were the party celebrating an engagement. When we said we were, she asked if we'd like a round of complimentary mezcal or a complimentary dessert. After some deliberation, we decided on dessert. Leslie ended up bringing both a round of mezcal and (delicious!!!) dessert.
The food and experience was so good that we knew...
Read moreWe recently visited Restaurante Mux in Mexico City, making it our first meal in Mexico. Initially, I hesitated to leave a review, wondering if perhaps our expectations of Mexican cuisine might not be well-informed. However, given that we enjoyed everything we had in Oaxaca after a few days in Mexico City and that this was our introductory meal in the country, our disappointment was particularly notable.
Expecting a showcase of the best or representative dishes, we opted for the tasting menu. Unfortunately, it fell short of our expectations. The main course of chicken and ribs was a letdown with the chicken being excessively dry and the portions uneven due to irregular cutting.
The dessert, though visually fun with the fire, lacked the sweetness, let alone flavor and richness, one would anticipate in a dessert, tasting more like plain steamed corn flour dough. Similarly, the two mole dishes chosen by our companion were overly bitter and disappointingly similar, despite featuring different proteins. The absence of guidance from our waiter on the similarity of these dishes was a missed opportunity.
The sole highlight of our meal was the chips and salsa, which we found enjoyable. This experience left us puzzled, especially in the context of the positive reviews we had read beforehand and all the amazing food we had in Oaxaca. We wondered if the quality of the tasting menu was not up to par, or if there was a difference in the preparation of dishes for us as newcomers to Mexican cuisine.
For those planning to visit, I'd recommend caution with the tasting menu, in hopes that other dishes might offer a more authentic and enjoyable taste of Mexico City's culinary offerings. Our experience, unfortunately, did not meet the expectations set by the vibrant food culture we anticipated and later...
Read moreAWFUL SERVICE! DON’T COME HERE. THE STAFF JUST WANTS TO GO HOME, SO SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
My fiancée and I came on a Saturday night around 9:30 PM, excited to try this place because of its good reviews.
One of the staff told us that the kitchen would be closing in 10 minutes, which we said was no problem. I asked if we could sit somewhere not by the door since it was cold, but he responded, “Someone with a reservation is coming.” We were confused since he had just mentioned that the kitchen would be closing soon. After ordering, I asked again about the table, and he repeated the same thing about the reservation. I even suggested, “If they don’t show up, can we move to that table?” Well, guess what? That reservation never showed, and we never got the table.
Anyway, I decided to skip looking at the menu and ordered the 5-course meal, while my fiancée ordered the mole and one taco. The food was okay—some dishes were too salty, while others lacked flavor.
The staff was not welcoming. I also asked our server about the table, and she never followed up. I requested silverware, and she forgot to bring it. What kind of restaurant charges $1,300 for a 5-course meal and can’t even remember to provide silverware? Ridiculous.
The last straw: I hadn’t even finished my 4/5 dish when she brought the check—keep in mind it was 10:30, and they close at 11. 5mins later, she comes back asking how are we paying. It was so awkward that I even said they shouldn’t be doing that since I wasn’t not even close to done and they don’t close at 10:30! She gave me an attitude, I felt like they just wanted us to leave.
What an awful experience! Definitely not worth our...
