We were told Lula’s was a must-visit for food and coffee in Tulum. On our first morning, I wandered over and ordered two double cappuccinos with oat milk. I was shocked when the bill came to nearly $24 — and even more disappointed when we got back to our hotel and realized they hadn't made doubles at all.
At that point, it didn’t seem worth the walk back to contest it, but the experience left a sour taste. Initially, we decided not to spend more money at Lula's — a decision that almost caused us to miss out.
A few days later, however, we gave Lula’s another chance and were pleasantly surprised by the food and drinks.
Guacamole was inventive — it tasted like it had been blended with pumpkin seeds, which were also sprinkled on top. (The chips were stale, but still had a good flavor.) The waiter strongly recommended the shrimp tacos, saying they were “incredible.” I found them good, but underwhelming — tasty, but missing the bold flavors you expect at that price point ($17). My wife ordered a poke bowl and found it flavorful and fresh, though a few pieces of the fish were stringy.
Where Lula’s really shined was the drinks. My wife’s lemonade was bright and fresh. I ordered a mezcal cocktail with passionfruit and a spicy rim, and it was the best drink I had in Tulum — real passionfruit, perfect balance, vibrant flavors. It was everything we had hoped for and hadn’t found elsewhere.
We came back a few days later for breakfast and had a fantastic experience: This time, the coffee was excellent, rich and creamy. The omelet and avocado toast were both outstanding, fresh, generous, and truly worth the money.
While our first impression of Lula's (the overpriced coffee mishap) was disappointing, we’re glad we gave them another chance. Their drinks are some of the best we had in Tulum, and both lunch and breakfast were memorable and...
Read moreFirst of all, I need to divide the review into Lula's kitchen restaurant and beach club, even though they serve the same meals and drinks.
We visited restaurant for a late lunch, drawn by the amazing views and atmosphere. We started with their excellent guacamole, though I would suggest automatically serving lime wedges eventhough the pico de gallo was pleasantly acidic. For our main course, we had tuna tostadas, a fantastic combination with apple, and fried frutti di mare, which were unfortunately overcooked and lacked flavor. The Italian wine was good, and the service was very pleasant and attentive.
After lunch, we wanted to spend some time on the beach. However, we were surprised by a minimum consumption requirement of $1000 per person, despite having already spent $2500 at the restaurant. Despite the happy hour from 5-7 pm, the last order was taken at ten to six, and the bill came to $1920. It felt like our restaurant consumption was counted against us without clear communication, leading to a total of $4500 spent for the afternoon. The beach service was not exceptional, requiring us to constantly flag down staff because we wanted to spend those $2000 in approx 2 hours. Additionally, seaweed began accumulating on the beach in the afternoon, affecting the entire area. From such establishment, we would...
Read moreWe really aprichiate that they have glutenfree, vegan options. We had both the pizza and the glutenfree pasta ( its a bommer the pasta had eggs though and they didnt told us ) But it was large portions and tasty. If they had vegan cheese it would be a 10..
The moothies and green juice was great! And also the guacamole and glutenfree, vegan bruschettas.
It's a plus that the place is petfriendly.
Staff and maneger really friendly and helpful and the vibe is nice and welcoming.
The atmosphere is amazing and the chess was fun. Its so close to the sea and the music its not needed. First days the music was pretty low volume but 3rd day so high we could barely talk to eachother.
It's a family friendly place it was a surprise and disappointment that the staff told the children to be quite and don't laugh so laud ( 😳) because it was a yogaclasses going on. ( but the music from the restaurant was obviously OK. )
Nature, food and service is a 5 star but the fact it cost 80 usd for one sunbed, the loud music, wifi boxes close to the sunbeds, children not allowed to laugh and play when they want was a big...
