We came across Mouda Palace as a result of hunting for a good beer, and on seeing a friendly, smiling chap touting for customers at the place where the lane connects with Talaa Sghira. It helped that the chap wasn’t pushy or aggressive - just warm, smiley, and polite. The hunt for a good beer was sort of - but naturally not entirely - delivered by the Casablanca. Being more of an IPA fan, the Casablanca lager was far from a wow factor, but what made up for the fair beer was the spectacular service at Mouda, in particular, by Fatima (‘Fatema’ per her name tag) and Aziz. We saw some really wonderful Moroccan hospitality consistently across the 5 or so days we repeatedly visited Mouda Palace, drinking Moroccan wine while we were at it. The switch to wine was naturally the optimal course of action given the selection of beers 😉
The complimentary snacks served with the drinks were alright - nothing to shout about, but the generosity was much appreciated. Their starters however, were quite nice indeed. I particularly liked their Harissa which was by far the best one I tried in Fes, especially as someone who loves spicy food. If you can’t handle spice, it’s probably best you didn’t eat their harissa. Spice lover? My word are you in for a treat.
The ambiance and staff were probably the two most important / contributing factors to just how much we enjoyed our time at Mouda. Indeed, it’s this place and Fondouk Bazaar on the parallel street that would make us want to come back to Fes despite the stiff competition from alternative options in the rest of Africa. We’re avid travellers (30 countries and counting) and are extremely picky about where we’d return. The time at Mouda Palace has unquestionably made our decision process of returning to Fes vs exploring somewhere else materially harder. We’re incredibly grateful to the staff for the stellar service and do wish them the very best - the owners of Mouda are lucky to have them on their payroll!
The decor and ambiance at Mouda also allows for a peaceful, quiet, and relaxed transient atmosphere and experience away from the hustle and bustle of the medina which we found was much needed, and allowed us to dive deeper into the Moroccan experience after a reboot/recharge.
All in all, a genuinely wonderful place to spend time and just relax. Thanks for a superb time, Fatima, Aziz, and everyone...
Read moreWhile walking around the old Fes we were approached by a young guy with a menu in his hand. We politely said no, since we recently had a little appetizer nearby, and went forward. The kid was really polite and didn't persist. On a second thought, we went back to see the menu he was trying to show us. Boy, oh boy! We've never been this glad to have approached by anyone! 😅😅
What a setting and what a restaurant!! It's indeed a palace, so elegant, extravagant and royal! Everyone was super nice and were so flexible to our requests. Aziz was our server and he was more than hospitable and kind. He literally made us feel at home, showed us around the restaurant, explained the restaurant/palace history, took us to the roof for the views and explained every single question we asked of him. We think he's the best server in all of Morocco 🇲🇦!
Food was amazing! They had lamb and they had couscous but not lamb couscous. We asked if they can put lamb on top of the couscous and maybe cook it that way. We didn't think they would say yes but they agreed and it was DELICIOUS!!! The couscous was super soft and juicy and had the consistency of melting-in-your-mouth. The quantity was super good and we enjoyed every bite of it.
I wish I hadn't ate at the other restaurant so I could order more. We were given a complementary dessert starter in the beginning of our lunch and some mint tea after we were done with our meal. Like I said, Aziz was so polite and poured the tea for us. The service couldn't have been better!
If anyone is going to Fès we're definitely recommending this place to them. It's so hidden inside that it's not easy to spot and so thankful to that young man who approached us ♥ . It's literally a hidden...
Read moreCame here for a birthday dinner. The staff went above and beyond to look after us both before and during service (email correspondence answering questions about taxis and the ability to use our credit cards).
We were visiting from Australia and had been told the Fes was pretty unsafe to walk around by the local guide on our tour. So the restaurant organised for us to be picked up and dropped off from the entrance of the Medina. After being in Fes, it doesn't feel any more unsafe than the rest of the country. On the contrary around the blue gate there were heaps of locals and tourists and it was actually a great vibe.
The food was sensational; couldn't fault anything. Best meat taginge we've had in the country. The cous cous was delicious and the pastilla was perfectly balanced.
The views of the sunset on the terrace are highly recommended but even if you choose to sit on the ground floor riad you will be impressed by the light, tiles and sense of grandeur.
Staff were friendly, multilingual and attentive. We loved them!
The only criticism would be that the cocktails were not great. The whisky sour didn't have enough/any sugar syrup. The Mouda cocktail was decent but the pieces of crushed fresh cardamom was a little overpowering and the seeds and skin were unpleasant to fish out. Red wine was OK.
Would definitely go back again and recommend to our friends.
Prices were food were very reasonable; consistent to cheaper than the rest of the tourist traps. Overall it was a bargain considering the venue and hospitality were so much better than those awful group tour toruist restaurants.
Worth checking it out at the very least for a beer or Mint tea on the terrace but we highly recommend...
