Angoletto — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Horrible. Four of us walked in and sat down to have some pasta and pizza. We were originally so excited because the bread was tasty. One of us was not hungry so she opted to have just a cup of coffee while the rest of us ordered a full meal. We were told then that they had a rule that each person had to order a plate to stay there. Our friend had ordered a coffee but it was required that she order food in order for us to stay. That obviously wasn’t happening so we left unsatisfied and annoyed.

The main problem we had was that they had not told us this policy before sitting down so we had to pay for the water and coffee which was around €8 total. In general, the waiter was rude in trying to explain this to us and was making fun of us with another waitress when we were leaving. Unpleasant overall, condescending, and disappointing. I have never been anywhere where you are forced to purchase a meal, especially when 3/4 people are eating a full meal.

Slow service. Had to remind waiter a couple of times about a straw for the three year old and a beer. When the main course eventually arrived (long after appetizers were finished) they had forgotten the pasta for the child, so again waiting for food that was too hot for her. When we eventually were ready to pay, they did not accept any cards (we are in 2019 and it was not a cheap meal at a hot dog stand) so I had to walk to the nearest ATM to bring paper money from there. I'm almost afraid to write this review in case this restaurant becomes a place where it's impossible to find a table. L'Angoletto is the quintessential "hole in the wall" Italian place. I really can't give it a higher compliment. I had the eggplant parm--it was the best. eggplant. parm. I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned; light, crunchy-yet-soft, the eggplant so tender I didn't need a knife. The atmosphere was so pleasant and cozy that we didn't want to leave and ended up having an extra (excellent) coffee. What a gem
