Café Batavia 1920 — Restaurant in Amsterdam

This place used to be a really nice spot to enjoy a meal and have a smoke. Now, you can’t smoke inside anymore, which I respect. So, I asked the bartender, 'Can I roll inside and smoke outside?' He said yes.

After about 20 minutes, an older man who also worked there and had overheard my question walked by while I was rolling and rudely said, 'You can't roll here.' He seemed to really dislike it, judging by his energy. He was also quite condescending and clearly wanted to attract a certain type of tourist.

It’s disappointing. We native Dutch speakers are tired of non-Dutch speakers taking over everything and ruining the experience. Why open a bar in Amsterdam if you look down on people who smoke weed? Some of the wealthiest and most intelligent...

15 years I’ve been going there to eat on a Sunday. Suddenly that kind of loyalty isn’t enough for even a polite reception on the phone. When I asked if it was possible to book a roast for 2 I was told in very short and rude terms that, no it’s first come first serve. That’s all fine and well when you don’t work 7 days a week and have the time to come early. I have booked with them literally 100s of times. Never missed a booking. I have told countless people about their menu and introduced many to the bar. Well the service had declined fast over the last year and I’ll not be bothering with the place again. Came here with some friends after we tried another place that was packed. This place is quite busy as well, it is located along a very busy passage way from the centre to central station.

There is no table service here, you have to order at the bar. It is also quite expensive compared to other spots in the city which are better.

We were sat next to the door and there were so many stupid people who would not close the door behind them when entering or leaving. At one point our table and another one started applauding for people if they closed the door.

Eventually we moved down stairs which is also the smokers lounge. I prefered we were still sat near the door in the end just because upstairs everything was clean and downstairs it was just...
