The Indonesian cuisine is widely available in the Netherlands seeing Indonesia used to be a Dutch colony. And I have to say the Indonesian food at Mama Makan is subpar. We had the grilled seabass and a shrimp dish. The seabass wasn't flavored at all. Most tasteful thing on the plate was the cocos flavored rice (nasi). Also the amount of prawn crackers that are offered before dinner and served with the dishes is simple too much and a cheap filler. At the very least give visitors a decent sambal. The one offered was more of a tomato puree than a hot sauce. Although the restaurant was almost empty the servers asked more than once if we made a reservation. Servers were too attentive interrupting our conversation more than once and asking us if we made a choice not even a minute after handing us the menus. To conclude. Interior is gorgeous, food just isn't worth it.. A typical hotel lobby restaurant. Save your money you can get much better Indonesian food for a fraction of the price.

One of the best value Indonesian Rijstafel / Rice Tavel options in town: So many courses and plates per course that we were barely able to finish, yet each dish a little gem in itself: Shrimp coconut soup, slow-cooked beef, fish, scampi, lamb, veg, exotic fruit etc. - amazing! Altogether a little bit spicy - would be great if they had one entire menu non-spicy, much as they have a full vegan rijstafel menu. The ambiance is more stylish than cozy, but the friendly service makes you feel right at home. And the New Year's dinner - wow!!! Lobster as part of the Rijstafel and a never-ending dessert buffet - keep some space... UPDATE: We went again for the New Year’s dinner, and while the Rijsttafel was delightful, the previous serving style course-after-course was replaced by the typical all-at-once format. It felt a bit less special - and to our disappointment the lobster had been taken out of the festive menu :(

A terrible evening. This restaurant is to be avoided. There is a limited amount of open wines, the one I choose was not available. How? Then the food. First you get some complimentary crackers, kroepoek. They are from yesterday and the opposite of crisp. Indonesian rice table for two at a very high price. It came cold. It looked very nice, but also cold. After complaining they redid the food. It came somewhat warm but was clearly thrown together in a hurry. Hurry? It took too long. The Lodeh was really bad, the Gado Gado was even worse, then some very mediocre dices, but also very nice Sateh and Atjar. Those were not the highlights, they were the only lights. Three mini bowl out of 14. And everybody is constantly apologizing, don’t! Serve good food so you don’t have to apologize. One waitress clearly did try her best, but this disaster of a restaurant is clearly to be avoided.

Our experience started with a problem with the reservation. They did not have it on the list. It was new years eve and I've booked it 2 months in advance and confirmed a day before. But they still had an open table, so we managed to sit down. The menu was fixed at 110 euros per person with a choice of a starter and a drink. The service was OK, however we asked several times for tap water for the table, when they finally brought it it was 15 euros per bottle and lasted for 4 glasses. We didn't know any better so we went with it. Turned out they also had free tap water carafes, they just decided they can ballon the price. That practice is popular in restaurants, it does not make it any better or less rude. After that came the food. It was OK. It came really late, but it was a taster menu of 13 things, so it is to be expected. The dishes were very oily. A lot of them came already cold, even tho they should have been served hot, like for example the stew. Two of the 13 things was rice, one plain one fried. Between four people it disappeared almost immediately as it was served in tiny bowls like the rest of the selection. We finished about 50-60% of the food. I cannot say it wasn't tasty, some of it was quite nice, but it definitely was much less appealing cold than it would have been hot. It was the evening of new years eve, so the staff was pushing us to finish quickly and move to the crowded bar. Overall, we spend just over 500 euros and left quite unsatisfied. Maybe they would have been better on a regular evening? But then again, looking at all the other reviews, they say pretty much the same things regardless of the time of the year... If you're looking to spend a lof of money and have a mediocre experience, this is the...

The food was tasty, the service was very friendly with some friendly jokes and very attentive and on time. We were a mid size group on a Thursday.

However do not expect real authentic Indonesian food or you will be disappointed. It is the Dutch interpretation of Indonesian food but performed well. For me not being Dutch it was just Dutch food (I see the Indonesian part from their colonial time as integral part of Dutch kitchen even though I know the traditional Dutch food is something very different) mingled with some Thai influence.

And for this I need to admit that it was HEAVILY overpriced (we had a group package and when I looked at the standard menu I just thought it would have been way cheaper to just order from the menu).

However we had a nice evening and the service was on point so 4 stars but definitely no 5. If you pay like close to 1000€ you could expect some of "the extra mile".

And why is it 3 stars? Because of the let's call them "head of service". Yes I'm talking about the guys in the black uniforms talking a lot, trying to present themselves as competent or funny (both is not the case) but in fact just trying to sell you non-sense as gold. Please if you want to be an expert then spend the time and get to know at least the basics of Indonesia and it's kitchen. And there is a golden rule in service: You never ever bragg about guests when they can see you. But these guys are too cool to follow rules. Too bad. This destroyed the good performance of the service doing the actual work.

I hope their management reads this and teaches them...
