The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is a botanical garden. It was established back in 1638 by the city municipality. Originally it was named the Hortus Medicus, which focused as a medicinal herb garden, as it was a response to the outbreak of the plague that was ravaging the area. There is also an orangery, in which traditionally orange trees and other tub plants are put inside during the winter. Adjacent is the former Hugo de Vries laboratory on Plantage Middenlaan, this building was designed by architect JM...
Read moreI was looking for something to do between Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam, something I could show my visiting family. I had just been to two botanical gardens in the UK for the Christmas lights and thought I should visit the botanical garden in my own city. I looked up Hortus Botanicus tickets and the event 'Hortus by Night' showed up on Google. Read through the event page a bit and bought 3 tickets for between 16.30 and 22.00.

In general it defeated its educational purpose which is a shame. It was even difficult to navigate ourselves around the park and follow a trail because there was no guiding light.
The upside is I communicated my dissatisfaction to the lady selling the ticket at the entrance and I got a refund. So to the organizers, I hope next time the garden is more appealing to...
