Wow, what an amazing place to visit in Amsterdam! This historic botanic garden is split into several sections, including the medicinal/herb garden that has some of the same types of plants that were first grown there hundreds of years ago, a beautiful water garden, and several incredible greenhouses that have plants from around the world. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the garden and how the goals/objectives of the place have changed over the years. I also loved how they’ve made the effort to grow more native plants which are much better suited to the local climate. One suggestion I would make would be to include more information about the relationship between the history of Dutch colonialism and the acquisition of the different plants—there was a small section about how the plants from Japan ended up there, but I’m curious to hear the stories of other plants that were brought to the garden. Although the garden itself isn’t that large (it could probably be visited in 1-2 hours), it’s really well maintained and is definitely a must do when visiting Amsterdam. Highly recommend!

The garden is very beautiful and varied. There are signs at every unique plant that make it easy to understand where it came from, what type of plant it is, some of its history, etc. While walking through the gardens, there are a lot of shaded areas, so even if you go on a hot day like we did, it’s still enjoyable. The greenhouses are all amazing and well kept. The plants are all healthy and thriving, and as you take a tour around the tropical greenhouse - you can practically hear the jaguars. It’s an amazing place. when we went to the souvenier shop there, they had just gotten a new register system, and the people at the cash register were quite old, so it was difficult for them to use it while we were buying our armbands. (Two of them had no price tag, I don’t blame them at all.) Although they had some trouble at the beginning, it took no longer than 5 minutes. They were very sweet about it as well. Would definitely reccommend visiting here, beautiful place and staff are just as wonderful as you’d hope they’d be.

Incredible historic botanical garden. Dates back to Dutch Trading Company days. The medicinal herb garden is set as original layout. Semicircular garden is catalogued by relationship. The fern garden is a knockout with a rare prehistoric fern being reintroduced to the world after thought extinct. The palm garden has a 300 year old palm from trading era. The wildflower garden is next to the carnivores and the hothouses. Restaurant is well priced, healthy and air conditioned by a geo thermal aquatic heat pump that also heats the greenhouses. Those reviewers that compare the garden to their own home garden or other botanicals are missing the beauty of the garden. The plant signs are in Latin and Dutch, not English. But it is a Dutch garden. Try Google Translate or snap photos of the tags you’re interested in and do some research. A deal at 9.75E. Plus it’s an easy bike ride or walk from anywhere in town. I’d love to see it at every season.

Despite the cloudy weather, my visit to Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam was quite pleasant. The gardens provided a tranquil escape with notable highlights such as the serene pond, home to a family of ducks and their adorable chicks. Additionally, the butterfly house and a striking redwood tree added to the charm of the visit. The gardens were well-maintained and offered a peaceful environment. However, it is worth noting that the main house or pavilion was under construction during my visit, which limited access to certain areas. In summary Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is a lovely place for a quiet and enjoyable outing, despite the ongoing construction of the main pavilion. The butterfly house and other natural attractions make it worth the visit.
