Do you want to experience Indian food at its best! You have come to the wrong place! Do you want to experience everything else? like being in an Indian restaurant? experiencing the vibe? then I guess yes, this might be your place. The food looks absolutely gorgeous but tastes mostly from "meh" to "this is not even Indian food" to "this is not even food ". To start it off, I mostly heard good things about this and had high expectations. From décor to ambiance, mind blowing! Really authentic! You get to be in India while being in Amsterdam. Amazing stuff! Then I ordered food! Some pakoras, complimentary Papadams. Good so far, good mix of sauces and chutneys. Staffs were really nice and friendly and helpful. They gave everything we asked for immediately. Pakoras were okay, I mean they are pakoras, hard to elevate them but okay, it was nice. Next comes the main menu - In the vegetarian side it was written "we don't make our dishes spicy or rich and we don't use ghee" - or something along that line. I was visibly confused. Was it a sarcasm or did they actually mean it (if they meant it then it is a red flag). But anyway, I ordered "Gosht-E-Avadh". "How spicy sir" "As spicy as you can make it" "okay" First bite and I thought to myself, did I ask them to make a spicy curry or a bowl full of chilly powder? Visible confusion intensifies It was to the point of inedible. Not because of the spiciness but because of the taste. I could feel the chilly powder, like the dried chilly powder in my mouth. They either didn't mix it well or put too much that it didn't get to settle down. Okay still, I have my mutton pieces. One by one I picked them up - no!! this is rubber, no this one too, wow more rubber pieces. But okay I paid this much! Might as well eat the rubber with the garlic naan. Well in their defense the naans were really good and you can even eat rubber with it. So I managed to fill my stomach, or whatever was left of it after regret filled it gleefully. They also serve the main dishes with some sides. In my case it was aloo matar, which was decent. You can't really mess it up after 40 years of running a restaurant, but still credit where...

Read moreMayur Indian Restaurant is in the museum district of Amsterdam just a block away from the Rijksmuseum.
I have been going here for almost 10 years. The owner, Manu, always remembers me and gives me a warm welcome that makes this place feel, to me, like more than just a restaurant. The welcome is genuine. All the servers are friendly and helpful.
I would call this an upscale Indian restaurant. It is absolutely beautiful inside with mood lighting set to a level that creates a classy and good vibe. If it is warm enough, I’d recommend sitting outside for great people watching.
GoPol was my server during my most recent visit. He recommended the 'old Monk drink' made with traditional Indian Rum. It looked like an old Fashion and was pretty good.
GoPol brought out the traditional rice cakes with 3 dips: pickled spicy, yogurt mint, and sweet mango puree. This comes with every dinner and it is a great, light way of getting your taste buds ready for a great meal.
It was a bit cold outside, so I ordered the chicken soup. It came out hot with fresh chicken pieces, but it was a bit bland for my taste.
The Jambo prawn appetizer, shrimp dipped in yogurt and tandoor sauce, was delicious.
For the main course I ordered butter chicken, which I have had several times over the years. It comes with a very light basmati rice. As usual, it was tasty and delicious, especially with the cheesy garlic naan.
If you are visiting Amsterdam and want a nice meal in a beautiful setting with great people, visit Mayur. They have consistently earned a 5-star...
