Read moreHong Kong style dim sum restaurant near china town. Went on a saturday at 11:30 - pre booked in advance, so there was no wait, but it wasn't super busy either. The restaurant opens at 11:30 so you can't be seated before this.
Order is made via the dim sum sheet with english, dutch, and chinese as well as photos of most dishes. If you join as a member, you get members' prices for some of the dishes as well as free chinese tea. This membership offer is a little confusing because there were 2 of us and we both had chinese tea but when we paid, only 1 chinese tea was knocked off the bill so maybe you need 1 membership per person for the free tea? you also want to double check the bill because we ticked members' price for 3 dishes in total, but only 2 were charged at membership price, and the 3rd one was charged at normal price.
the siu mai were huge! i mean, like humongous. the fillings were good quality (pork and shrimps), and taste was good. har gows were decent. lor may gai (lotus wrapped sticky rice - the single one): not the best. the sticky rice was a bit too watery, and the filling wasn't to my taste. Inside had a char sui, duck alice with bone and chicken. ham sui gok (the deep fried sticky rice dough with meat inside): not too bad but super oily. i mean, this IS a deep-fried dim sum, but I've never seen it as oily as this. the nase was dripping with oil after it cooled down. Wasn't much filling either - which i personally prefer. char sui pastry (the long ones with puff pastry): not the best. patry was a bit dry, and the char sui...
Read moreThis restaurant has really gone downhill in the past half a decade or so. It has always been crowded and noisy because it is in the most touristic part of Amsterdam, but the quality of the food and its relative price used to make up for it. However, the last few times we've eaten here, the food was disappointing at best.
Some side dishes are still good, but the full-price main course dishes were seriously lacking the last time we ate here. The rice noodles with beef, a staple dish that used to be really good at this restaurant, did not have anything going for it aside from the alright flavour of the beef. The roast duck was dry, and I've had supermarket chicken with more flavour. The way that dishes are designed and served is authentic, sure, but I wouldn't bother if you're looking for authentic taste, because it's really hit or miss with the menu, and the misses are increasingly common.
The staff also appear to be perpetually stressed and overworked. Always busy, always in a hurried power-walk to the next table. Multiple times we've had orders arrive very late, and in some cases not at all. Snarky or frustrated responses are also not uncommon, and I daresay we weren't rude about any of it happening either. Maybe the restaurant needs more staff or fewer tables at once, because interactions with the staff aren't exactly pleasant at this point.
This used to be a favourite spot for us to get proper Cantonese food in Amsterdam, but at this point I don't see a reason to wade through the sea of tourists to have a mediocre meal in a stressful dining...
