The Royal Palace was built in the seventeenth century as the Town Hall of Amsterdam, after a design by Jacob van Campen. It's paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most distinguished artists of the time and allude to the city's influence and prosperity in the Dutch Golden Age. In 1808 Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace. The superb collection of Empire furniture, clocks and chandeliers date from that period. The collection of Empire furniture is one of the best preserved and most complete collections in the world. The rooms in the Palace are decorated with artworks from the collection of the House of Orange-Nassau Historic Collections Trust. Many paintings show the various members of the family of Orange-NassauI've been to Amsterdam a total of four times and I was running out of places to see, so I chose to visit the Royal Palace in Amsterdam with my Dutch friend. I had fairly low expectations as I'm not a fan of royal history, but I was pleasantly surprised by this historic site. This magnificent structure was built as the Town Hall of Amsterdam but it was converted into a royal palace by the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis Bonaparte, who was installed as King of Holland during the Napoleonic Wars. The palace retains Bonaparte's lavish Empire style furniture, which is still used during royal receptions. For the past 200 or so years the palace has been used as the Dutch monarchy's official reception palace for world leaders and heads of state. The audio guide gives you a lot of interesting information about the history of the palace and I recommend you set aside around an hour and a half-two hours in order to really explore the history of the building.
