Worst canal cruise ever – rude guides, boring experience
I booked this cruise for 3 people on July 30 at 19:20. We arrived 15 minutes early, as instructed, but boarding was delayed because the crew was more focused on selling extra tickets than welcoming passengers.
While waiting, I asked one of the staff (a young blonde man, not our guide) if there would be blankets, since it was obviously going to be colder on the water. He kindly said he would get some. Once onboard, the boat pulled over to the other side and he handed a stack of blankets to our guides (the driver, a tall older man with gray hair, and the “guide,” an average-height dark-haired man). Did they offer them to guests? Absolutely not. Our guides were completely inhospitable unless you were buying drinks. Instead, they stashed the blankets away in storage without a word. Meanwhile, halfway through the trip, my daughter and several other women were visibly shivering—some even sharing jackets—while the guides ignored them.
Neither guide showed the slightest concern for guests’ comfort. I eventually got their attention and asked for blankets with only 15 minutes left, at which point the driver made a snide remark about dressing better for the weather. Beyond rude. I travel through Scandinavia multiple times a year, and everywhere you go there are blankets and sheepskin pads—you don’t have to ask; they’re simply offered. That doesn’t mean Scandinavians are unprepared for the weather—it means they understand the weather & care about hospitality.
As for the “tour,” it was practically nonexistent. Together, our guides spoke maybe five minutes total during what was supposed to be a 60-minute cruise. When they did speak, it was mostly to push overpriced drinks, and their commentary was so quiet you could hardly hear. Imagine—Amsterdam, with all its rich history—reduced to almost no information. Passengers sat cold and bored in silence.
To top off the rudeness, at the very end the dark-haired guide finally raised his voice—not to share history—but to close out tabs and pander for tips. He literally stood at each passenger’s seat with the bill, suggesting they add a tip and hovering until they did. Needless to say, he did not get one from me.
We couldn’t wait to get off this boat. Between the lack of hospitality, the dismissive attitude, the awkward pressure for tips, and the complete absence of meaningful narration, this was a total waste of time and money. This was about my 10th canal cruise in Scandinavia, and by far the worst. Do yourself a favor and choose any other canal cruise...

Read moreWith so many canal tours to choose from, it was hard to decide prior to our trip in March 2019. However, I am very glad we selected Friendship Rederij for our tour! We had an enjoyable hour in a comfortable and low-key atmosphere, and were provided so much information about Amsterdam and the canals! I would highly recommend Friendship Rederij over a larger, more commercial boat, as this was a great experience.
Our guides were very knowledgeable and easy to listen to, and the smaller boat was relaxing and comfortable. Drinks are available for purchase while on board, and they do take cards and Euros which was very nice. We were in a group of probably 20ish people. The tour was in English, which was much appreciated. The tour was extensive, and we felt like as the boat was smaller than some of the bigger, commercialized ones, we were able to view more of the canals. It was also nice that the boat is uncovered, so no matter where you were sitting, you were able to get great pictures!
Do yourself a favor and choose Friendship Rederij for your canal boat tour while visiting Amsterdam. This is a well-priced, less touristy, and...
