Van Wonderen Stroopwafels, Amsterdam – An Overpriced Disappointment Visited on Sunday, 16th February at around 7 PM Van Wonderen Stroopwafels in Amsterdam might be one of the most famous spots for tourists looking to try the iconic Dutch treat, but based on our experience, it’s all hype over quality. Pricing – Extortionate! First and foremost, the prices here are absolutely ridiculous for what you get. Stroopwafels are a traditional Dutch treat, but at Van Wonderen, you are clearly paying for the name, not the quality. There are plenty of other places in Amsterdam offering better stroopwafels for half the price. Service – Shockingly Poor The service we experienced was completely unacceptable. There were three female staff members behind the counter, all too busy giggling and chatting amongst themselves to acknowledge customers properly. There was no interaction, no greeting, no thank you, and certainly no effort to provide even basic customer service. If the staff had been properly trained, this might have been an enjoyable experience, but clearly, they need serious coaching in customer service skills. Additionally, we had to wait a long time for our waffles, despite others who ordered after us receiving theirs first. How does that even work? There was no order to how things were prepared, making the experience even more frustrating. Odd Staff & Strange Policies To make matters worse, there was a male staff member who seemed to serve no real purpose other than to tell customers they weren’t allowed to eat inside. Why? There was no clear explanation, just a bizarre, unfriendly attitude. It felt like they were more interested in policing customers rather than making sure they had a good experience. Waffle Quality – Nothing Special Considering the price, the actual stroopwafel was underwhelming. It wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t anything spectacular compared to other stroopwafels available in Amsterdam for much more reasonable prices. The toppings looked great in pictures but didn’t add much to the taste—just a way to make them seem more "Instagrammable." Final Verdict – Avoid at All Costs! Between the insane prices, poor service, and mediocre product, Van Wonderen Stroopwafels is nothing more than a tourist trap. If you want authentic, delicious, and fairly priced stroopwafels, look elsewhere. This place is a complete waste of money and patience. Head office should seriously consider training their staff if they want to maintain...
Read moreAlright, let's spill the piping hot tea on this so-called "stroopwafel store" in Amsterdam city centre. You know, the one that blew up on Tiktok? More like blew out.... of proportion. Not only is there a never-ending line of basic b*tches waiting to get their hands on an overpriced waffle, but once you finally make it inside, you're greeted by the most unfriendly and rude staff you've ever encountered. And guess what? There are no pricing signs in sight, or so you think, until you see a sign so small you'll need to make friends with a literal ant so it can help you read the prices. Which won't be a problem because half your darling stroopwafel will end up on the floor anyway cause someone forgot to put enough caramel and stick it together. Yes I know there's a crowd but watch where you're walking, look over your shoulder and under your shoes because their working floor is a hot mess. Literally, caramel over chocolate over marshmallow over nuts, if I was a rat I'd find a dark corner and move in cause with that filth you best believe I won't be leaving the premises anytime soon. If somehow you still manage to order your beloved "dutch cookie" after all this jazz, get your cash and your epipen ready because you better be prepared to counter your allergy to tourist prives and fork over a ridiculous 11 euros for a single stroopwafel, minimum. Yes, we're talking certified slightly below average realness up to 15 euro a pop (for now🤑) if you add more variations of sugar and chocolate. But you call your bank and you get that overdraft, cause you deserve it 💫 So take all that money you were saving up for your lunch cause mediocrity isn't going to pay for itself. After all, who doesn't want to spend half their day in pursuit of what can only be considered the most expensive in-flight snack? (KLM is gagging) But wait, there's more - the taste. As soon as you bite into it.... oh my, if you’ve ever eaten a stroopwafel before, you better take a deep breath because you are about to ride the tidal wave of nostalgia, cause it literally tastes like any other packaged stroopwafel - only this particular one had an unfortunate accident with a selection from the list of a diabetic's worst enemies. Highly recommended if: you have nothing better to do with your time...
Read moreThis place was high on our list as a 'must visit' on our most recent stay in Amsterdam. I must admit, I was heavily influenced by the social media advertising and hype.
First impressions were the beautiful exterior and the stunning window displays. We were directed to queue by the windows and it was around a 10 minute wait to be served.
As we entered the store there was a large queue waiting for their orders, it was difficult to see prices or displays due to the volume of customers. There was a centre display which was repeatedly being knocked over.
At the front of the queue we were able to see the prices and the products. There was a cute display of ready made Stroopwaffels. It must have been a stressful day as the woman who served us was very annoyed.
I was really shocked about the prices, they were very steep! We bought 2 medium Stroopwaffels and a tin of them for a family member, this cost us just over 50 euros.
I waited around 15 minutes for the Stroopwaffels to be prepared and was able to fully view the preparation area. The preparation area was absolutely filthy, with food crushed into the floor and the jars, walls and surfaces covered in food. There was so much cross contamination. One of the workers made a hazelnut Stroopwaffel and then prepared a different one and you could see bits of the hazelnut stuck to it. Hazelnut is quite a common allergy, so this was concerning.
When I was handed the Stroopwaffels I had to squeeze out of a heavily packed store.
We found a place to sit by the canal and I noticed that there was sauce all over the back of the packaging. It was so filthy.
The Stroopwaffels themselves tasted the same as any other place, there was nothing different or unique about them. They were warm and the flavours were nice.
I wouldn't return here myself, but I wouldn't actively steer people away. The gift tins and boxes are beautifully presented. I would probably advise to go there for a special gift than for yourself. But there are plenty of other stores with a dine-in experience, which is preferable dependant...
