👍👍ABOUT THE MUSEUM The Amsterdam Museum is a meeting place for anyone who wants to learn more about the city. Amsterdam Museum Amsterdam: a world city? Yes, but also small, quaint and strong-minded. Home to Johan Cruijff, Rembrandt, Ajax, the Red Light District, the Dutch East India Company and marijuana. The capital of the Netherlands. A 1000-year-old trading city that has a special relationship with water and a strong focus on entrepreneurship, creativity, citizenship and free-thinking. In the monumental Amsterdam Museum building you will discover the story of Amsterdam through a large number of masterpieces, such as an aerial map from the Middle Ages and Breitner's The Dam. See, read about, hear and experience how the city has developed in the Amsterdam Museum. Amsterdam DNA The Amsterdam DNA presentation offers a captivating, one-hour overview of the history of Amsterdam on the basis of interactive images, sounds, movement and specially selected objects. For the children The Little Orphanage is an attraction for children from the age of 4 to 12 This interactive presentation allows children and their parents to learn all about life in a 17th century orphanage.

The museum was recommended to me by a friend for the great historical information presented in an interesting way - for example the inside of a house or the device used to lift ships through the narrow canals. I was extremely disappointed to find out only AFTER going through the museum (and asking at the entrance because something seemed off) that it is now moved from the original location, which is being renovated. Only part of the exhibits are available - mostly just paintings and some short videos. There was nothing interactive and even with the audio guide got boring quickly. Not a good place for kids. I actually feel cheated about wasting one of our two precious days in Amsterdam on this place. It should be made more clear that this is not the full Amsterdam history museum that people might expect from previous reviews and recommendations.

By far, one of my favorite museums in Amsterdam. I've only visited the museum in this temporary location, which it shares with the former Hermitage Museum. But I must say the location and the space are really nice - especially the gardens and the view from the Amstel river. This is the perfect museum for those who want to escape the overcrowded, more famous museums. It features a small permanent exhibition that tells the story of Amsterdam; this is perhaps the best curatorial work I've seen in Dutch museums. The audio guide is a must. Since it is a small exhibition, it’s perfect for an early morning visit or an after-lunch break. They always have excellent small temporary exhibitions too, which are always worth seeing. I always recommend this museum to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Rubbish. Got a refund. We went here many years ago and found it a wonderful story of the history of Amsterdam with lots of old paintings and drawings. Today, unfortunately, it’s just a poor audio visual display on one floor, and several rooms full of nothing more than photos of young people’s faces in brightly coloured rooms with mirrors. Not an old painting or drawing ANYWHERE. They had signs saying some of the exhibits weren’t available due to reconstruction, but what was available was very poor value given they were still charging the full €13.50 admission. After less than one hour we were finished and after I complained they refunded one ticket. Very disappointing, and not recommended.

You got me, I love Museums. Stumbled on this hidden gem in the heart of Amsterdam city central. Lots of entrances. Lovely histological arena with descriptions of what you are seeing. There are some free areas which u can access without payment and have a lovely stroll around but for you to have access to the heart of the museum, u'd have to pay an admittance fee of about €10-15. Charges for children are lower. Loads of stuff to see including a side for the dungeons (yeesh, shivers!!) There is a part by the entrance where u can have a cup of coffee or hot drink of ur choice at good charges. In all it's a good place to visit, learn, have fun. Wheelchair accessible entrances. Ciao

It’s really small. AND if you take an audio tour, it is filled with a more honest look at Amsterdam’s history, rather than the self congratulatory tone most museums displaying history, will take. Their inner corridor exhibit on Amsterdam’s true history, part of their “experimental” exhibit, acknowledges a lot of unpleasant, violent colonialist history and I felt relaxed knowing truth was being acknowledged. The exhibit upstairs on the Lenape people of what is now called Northeast United States, and the history of enslavement, displacement, subjugation and murder is so well and compassionately captured in interviews with current day Lenape people. Very powerful!
