Block & Barrels — Restaurant in Groningen

Another update (original at bottom😅) : The owner reached out to me and it is clear that he really cares about the customer experience and has a high standard for his restaurant. He immediately offered to see me in person and to find a solution together. I'm definitely open to giving them another chance soon and think this was just an unfortunate evening.

Updated review: This is hard for me to write as I usually like to give good reviews. I'm just getting home from my second visit here and had an unpleasant experience with my partner. We ordered the hanger steak on a recommendation. It was not good, very chewy, an odd scent, and generally not what I'd expect from here. The server never checked on us after serving the dish, this could be cultural and I'm open to that possibility. I ate mine from hunger, my partner left hers untouched for the most part. I asked if they could take one off the bill after explaining the situation and they said "sorry, if you said something earlier we could make you something else" I didn't want to argue or cause a scene. I paid and left with I've full steak left behind.

In this world of vegetarians and vegen PC is Block & Barrels the last bastion of steak in Groningen. Steak… not just any steak but selected local sourced ‘blarkoppen’. Steak cooked to perfection, Steak that makes you want to scream ‘you need te eat here’ Your average vegan person wont understand that ancient feeling that these steaks give. These steaks dont die two times, unlike you get served in many restaurants. They die a glorious death to be resurrected on your wooden plank served with fabulously delicious crunchy veg and gratin potatoes. This is a restaurant that takes no sht, read the big sign before you come in. I, as a trans person feel sooooo comfortable here. The food really is great. The beer is fab and they offer a selection of tap beers that change on a regular basis of course their standard selection is exemplary. Me and my friend went here on a Wednesday evening. It's a bit of a wonderful search to find the restaurant, you get to see the butcher and the fact that there is a separate cafe and such which is nice.

We sat down at 5, we were the first ones. I want to give a massive shout out to the wonderful waitress that's from Australia I think (didn't get the name) for being the most wonderful human being and for being seriously funny. She made us feel right at home.

The food was very good, one tip would be maybe mention on the menu that the 'half a bbq smoked chicken' is pretty spicy. I checked afterwards it's not. And there was like a lot of spicyness. Which is fine, but not everyone can handle it.

Also the food did take quite long to be brought to the table which was kind of a bummer since we were the first ones seated.

Loved all the different kind of beers and all the suggestions I got, I love trying new things. Also really loved how the place looked.
