We went for lunch. Very busy even outside of the tourist season. The service is excellent and fast, which is commendable under such busy circumstances. The ambiance is that recycled/pop-up restaurant look, everything looks like it is re-purposed. It's a good look, very homey.
The food itself is hit and miss - more hit than miss though. We had both types of empanada (meat and vegetables) - very tasty, if you want only one then I would say go with the vegetarian one, it had the bigger flavor explosion. Just realize that they're gone in two bites, I couldn't do with only one.
We had the vegetarian bean burger; that's far overpriced for what you get. Most of the flavor comes from the sauce, the "burger" itself is literally bean paste. It tastes like beans and it is very starchy and brittle, I can't really recommend it unless you love beans. I've had vegetarian burgers in Rotterdam that were far richer in flavor with a more appealing texture than this at less cost.
We also took all three types of taco on the menu; chicken, pulled pork and lentil. The tacos to my taste were a little on the small side, but on the other hand they're priced reasonably so it isn't too big a deal. Given how they're served, it's pretty clear that the assumption is that you order three of them.
The lentil one was pretty boring; lentils just don't have the flavor in them, the taco shell itself out-flavors the filling. The chicken one was very nice. The pulled pork one... I was silent eating that, arguably the best item on the menu. I'd go back just to get three of those. But I also still need to try...
Read moreThe food is okay (nothing special to be honest). The service was very okay until a waiter came to replace the previous waitress we had. We asked for churros and his attitude was rude to say they had closed the kitchen already (they didn't announce it to us) and then we asked for the bill. He came then with the bill to charge us for a wrong order. We do not live in Rotterdam, therefore our first time eating at this place. We ordered a small salad and some tacos. In my head I knew the bill price but it came more expensive. They made a mistake and gave us a big salad instead. We claimed we thought it was a small since we ordered small and the waiter answered back with a very disrespectful attitude "well you ate it, so you have to pay it". We didn't agree and didn't want to pay for their mistake but he insisted we should have not eaten it (we had no idea what the size of plates is and saw lots of huge bowls passing by to other tables, so couldn't tell if that was a big or small salad). He continued insisting in us paying for their mistake since then their business was going to lose a lot of money.
Of course I denied to pay for what I didn't order and at the end the manager agreed on not charging us. But this is to show how a person without customer service knowledge ruins a whole experience.
You owner of businesses, train better your stuff. Someone was doing it very well before this man, but just two minutes ruined a whole experience which...
Read moreSadly this restaurant lacks some of the most integral part of Meso-American food - corn, spices, beans. For instance, anyone who's traveled to the American Southwest, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, to places as far south as South America knows that without corn, you cannot have good tortillas. Without beans you cannot have a good protein substitute that's healthy and earth friendly. And without spice, well you might as well not try to pass it off as Latin food. Here's what was wrong: The flautas were more like eggrolls - NOT flautas at all. The guacamole looked store bought and mass produced. The cheese on the nachos dries up and is not gooey, which makes you wonder why they even bother calling them nachos. The ceviche had too much lime even for it being ceviche. The most criminal thing of all was the size of the tacos, which were NOT worth the price. Thank god the drinks were good, because had they sucked, I don't know what I would've done. As for the service, it was mediocre at best. Look, now I know the internet is a place a lot of disgruntled and angry people get on to either vent or complain, but I had high hopes for this place. Witte de Wit is a happening spot and needs its variety, so this...
