I want to give a review as I think the other comments are making the impression of this hostel worse than it is. So we, 3 girls from Germany, found an last-minute-offer and were booking in for 5 days and then I was extending for another night.
First of all some general facts: It is a hostel in Rotterdams center - you will find everything within walking 2-10 mins: smartshop, MC Donalds, shopping area and a beautiful garden. The hostel has 3 floors (but feels like "climbing the mount everest"^^) with shared bedrooms and privat rooms that are named. We were staying in room "Ruben", 3rd floor, and very happy with that: it was comfy and had enough space for the 3 of us. The beds were nice and there was a small fridge too. You have a shared shower and also toilet which can be locked and have been quite clean. The employees working there are very friendly - I was missing the check out time because of sleeping to deep for my alarm bell but they weren't harsh at all and let me finish packing my stuff and having a shower.
Only complaint: we wanted to call the reception to inform them about us being late for the check in but no one was answering - so we wrote an email an finally someone was responding us that they can manage this situiation. And second complaint: there is no air conditioning system which you really felt badly: our room and the floors have been very heated up (august)
So I would recommand to bring a vent or sth that can help to cool down a litte. And moskito spray as well as they were really mean to us! (And you'll get just 1 card for 3 persons - can't tell whether that's normal for dutch hostels or not.)
The last night I've spent in the shared bedroom which was for woman only. There you really have very small space (but at least some lockers in the floor), it's also hot and you have one tiny fridge for 9 persons if its fully booked out. And the beds are not very comfortable. But there are more then enough charging opportunities. The shower / bathroom was also not that clean as we've experienced it before but thats the fault of the people - if everyone is doing its best to keep it clean and tidied up it will be fine.
So all in all I'd say it's a hostel that is worth a try if you don't want to spend much money but still stay at Rotterdam near the center.
Greetings from Germany, we'll visit you again! :)

Read moreI booked a room for nine days at the Thuis bij Schell hostel, on the second day of my stay (yesterday) I received a bicycle from work, as a result the darkside decided that I enjoy too many favors in life and this is how my saga continued and ended as fast as a bike fall on an icy road, in the aforementioned hostel: This morning I was evicted from the hostel and the reservation was canceled by the receptionist. For the following reason: last night around 20:00 I returned to the hostel. The area outside the entrance has some bicycles parked there, most of them without seats, the front or back wheel is missing... I took the bicycle upstairs, there is a corridor that connects the rooms on each floor, I left the bicycle on the corridor (hallway) at the same floor where I had the room. No one was there at the time, no receptionist or other staff. This morning the bike was no longer there, I asked my roommates about it, one of them informed me that the receptionist is sleeping in one of the rooms. When I could talk to him, he told me that I left the bike in a forbidden place and blocked the emergency exit, for which I have to pay 50 euros and he will have to cancel the reservation. The bike was not blocking any exit or entrance, the exit was actually blocked by two chairs and a table that are still there. There are no instructions or warnings displayed anywhere, I couldn't find anyone anywhere yesterday to get support or information. I tried to explain this to the receptionist but he said it wasn't his problem. I then called the police, two policemen arrived, they listened to our statements about the situation and their decision was that I should not be evicted, instead I should have been warned about the house rules or any regulations regarding bicycle storage in case that such regulation exists. One police officer told him that I cannot be evicted and I have the right to press charges against the hostel for this situation. I have now found and booked another place for tonight, I do not really know how to...react to this incredible situation I found myself in, I still don't know if the reservation will be refunded or not...all in all, very unprofessional services, unfortunately I am not in position to recommend that location or to describe it in...

To begin, there is no lobby or common space except two chairs in the hallway of each floor. Owners are working out of a dark, grungy bar that is not currently operating as a bar. A few advertised amenities were not included such as a free breakfast, bar, and a terrace.
The female dorm smelled poorly despite having a window open and the floors were not clean underneath the beds at all. I found an old sweater, sock, other garbage and more.
The women's bathroom is tiny, requiring you to sit under the sink to be on the toilet. Has mold that smells, no ventilation, hand soap, or hand towels. There is also no hot water for the shower.
I booked six nights and could not stay that long. On my third night, it was just myself in the dorm and at least one mouse if not more, started crawling up the 10 foot tall curtains near my head while I was trying to sleep. The scratching noises alerted me to their presence. I looked in the corner of the floor and found many mice droppings. I left the next day.
This hostel has no sound insulation, the doors slam, stairs are steep and noisy with people coming up and down them at all hours of the night. Primarily older men in the building, I did not feel comfortable at all as a young woman alone. There is no elevator and I was told I could receive assistance with my suitcase, though no one was there to help when I needed.
Staff are only around to assist between 12-8 (ish).
The only redeemable factor of this hostel is it's location, however, for nearly the same price you can stay two blocks away at King Kong Hostel for an astronomically better experience.
This was a truly terrible stay and I would not suggest it to ANYONE. Owners should be ashamed that they pretend to operate a...
