Chesterfield's itself is a pleasant restaurant and bar but it's the parking policy and gate agent that's responsible for this one-star review.
Customers can get up two hours free parking. You get a ticket with a timestamp that you return to the gate agent when leaving. I left within two hours and was charged $3. Why I asked. The man said my ticket was not "validated". Validated, what does that mean and by who I asked. He said to read the parking sign - I did, no mention of validating your ticket. I tell him this and ask again. He said Chesterfield's needs to stamp the ticket. First time I'm hearing this but he claims he told me on the way in. Doesn't matter, I have a receipt from Chesterfield's, that's verifiable timestamped proof with my card number on it. He refuses to accept it, huh? He starts to ignore me and redirects his attention elsewhere. He was incredibly rude, raised voice, lots of attitude which is typical for the "friendly island". I tell him the parking policy is a scam as they hide their policy and don't accept proof of your patronage at Chesterfield's. He responds that they are working and need to get paid. Unbelievable.
I asked around and found out that the owners of Chesterfield's supposedly also own that parking area, and therefore I think it's justified to leave this rating here.
I don't care that it cost me $3, I'd happily pay that up front if they made it clear. That they use dirty tactics to give customers a surprise bill...
Read moreSaw several positive reviews and heard good things about the restaurant so I thought I would try it out for lunch while in Phillipsburg. It was a bit challenging to find, but with assistance found it by the cruise ships. I walked in and was told to pick a seat, so I sat by the waterfront. After a few minutes the waitress came to take my drink reqest, it wasn't very busy but it was a while for her to return for the food order. She asked if I was ready to order and I stated I would be, and she turned around and left before I could ask about an item on their limited lunch menu. She never returned! I made eye contact with her twice and she looked away. Now I am not one to complain often, but if this is an example of the friendly island, Chesterfield Restaurant didn't get the message. After about 20 minutes I got up, went to the bar and paid for my drink that was never refilled and left. I watched her wait on two other tables that came in to the restaurant after me. Only when I was paying for my drink and was leaving did the waitress acknowledge me and stated she was just on the way to take my order. I understand that things are more laid-back on the island, this is just an example of horrible customer service or in this case, no service. No desire to...
Read moreJust left Chesterfield's restaurant for dinner. Worst food and worst service we've encountered in all of our years coming to Saint Maarten. Lunch there earlier in the week was fine, but tonight was just outright disappointing. After telling our waitress we did not like our meals (we tried to stomach the stuff shrimp & seafood platter, but none of it was fit to really eat). When we complained, the waitress asked if we wanted anything else (really? ah... no), to which we said 'No thanks'. Our meals were not comp'ed (but hey, she validated our parking, woohoo!) When I asked if it was normal to charge customers who didn't like their meals, she said that since we had attempted to eat it, and wouldn't order anything else, they still charge for the whole meal... SO, my advice to you, if you're looking for great food, great service, etc., go to Greenhouse, La Rosa, 3 Amigo's, ANYWHERE other than Chesterfield's. There are some great restaurants over near Simpson Bay, but dinner there is highly NOT recommended. Back out our villa and about the bust out the vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, something good to remove this bad taste...
