De Luca — Restaurant in The Hague

We ordered the “cool cappuccino’s” looking at the picture on the menu card where it clearly looked like cool cappuccino = iced coffee (brewed milky coffee with ice cubes). The picture of the beverage was a coffee colored light liquid with lots of ice cubes. To our dismay we got something that literally came out of a slushee machine and tasted like coffee. When I told the waiter that what he delivered looked nothing like the picture on the menu he got angry at me. Then he took the drinks back and brought “new” ones. They were the same drink in a new glass with more ice cubes. I got uncomfortable and took the drinks back inside and this time explained why I was so unhappy and told him that I wanted simple coffee with ice cubes in it (like in the picture). He gruntled something and made the drinks. Then his colleague came to deliver the drinks and told me that iced coffee isn’t a menu item. When I asked her why there is a picture of it on the menu then she simply said “yea but that’s just not what we have”. I’m the end we drank our now correct iced coffees and...

Eating at De Luca’s on a chilly January Sunday afternoon was a mixed experience. The ground level was crowded and cold because the wind cams in from the doors opening and closing. If felt noisy and busy as people filed in and out. The servers were overworked but tried to be friendly.

The groups seemed to be families, 30+ and older retired couples. The servers were a mix of 20s and middle age.

I ordered the lobster soup to start and then had a tuna steak which came with fries. I do not like mayo so I asked for mustard. De service vooraf was echt perfect! Ik had een vraag over de doorlooptijd van het diner ivm een voorstelling en een aantal allergieën. Hier werd ik netjes over gebeld en er werd fijn meegedacht over de allergieën. Heel prettig!

Toen we aankwamen was er een fijne tafel voor ons gereserveerd en de bediening was vriendelijk.

Toen we allebei een glas wijn, dat trouwens goed gevuld was, bestelde en hier ook een glas kraanwater bij vroegen werd ons verteld dat dat niet mogelijk was. Later tijdens het eten kwam een andere ober ons wel spontaan een glas water brengen.

Het eten zelf viel wat tegen. De porties zijn absoluut riant, maar het eten is niet goed op smaak en de kwaliteit van het stuk vlees (we hadden allebei de entrecote) was ook niet bijzonder. En ondanks dat we een deal hadden voor een driegangendiner moesten we nog los frietjes bij bestellen (het hoofgerecht kwam zonder enige vorm van koolhydraten). Dit voelde wat flauw.

Daarnaast had ik zowel in de reservering als aan tafel aangegeven dat ik allergisch ben voor paddenstoelen. Helaas kwamen de carpacciorolletjes met truffelmayonaise. Dit werd snel opgelost, alleen jammer dat daardoor het voorgerecht niet op smaak was. Ook de garnalensoep kon aardig wat zout en peper gebruiken.

De doorlooptijden tussen de gerechten was goed en er werd regelmatig gevraagd of alles naar wens was en bij het afruimen van het voorgerecht werd netjes gevraagd of het hoofdgerecht al meteen mocht komen. Alleen aan het einde ging het niet helemaal goed en liet de cheesecake lang op zich wachten en werd na 2x helpen herinneren pas gebracht.
