We spent a long weekend in Den Haag and didn't plan on eating Italian food. Twice!
We stumbled upon Made in Sud while looking for a place to eat dinner. We were warmly welcomed by Carmine, the owner, who although we didn't had reservation on a Friday night, managed to sit us within a few minutes.
We decided to go with the 4 course meal (€37.50pp) which includes an antipasti platter, half a portion of pasta, a main dish and a desert. We also ordered a bottle of the house wine (€21) and a bottle of sparkling water (€6.25).
And then the party started. Carmine, who was also our waiter for the evening, served a bread basket with tapenade. Then he poured the wine, which was excellent and explained its origins. After that we got a large platter with 5 kinds of antipasti. It had 2 kinds of cured meats, Caprese, fish carpaccio and octopus slices. The antipasti was very tasty and refreshing.
For the pasta we ordered the Spaghetti alla Carbonara which was very good and not too salty.
For our main courses my partner ordered the Veal with mushrooms and I ordered the Seabass fillet. The veal was tender and the mushroom sauce was very rich and tasty. My Seabass fillet arrived wrapped in foil, which Carmine carefully opened, poured the orange and lemon sauces inside, closed the foil and told me to wain another minute before I open it. After a minute, when I opened it, I found the fillet topped with fennel, garlic, orange slices and thyme. That fish was a really good and delicate.
For desert, we ordered a coffee panna cotta and a tiramisu. The panna cotta was excellent but the highlight was the tiramisu. Carmine explained that he does not put alcohol/coffee in the tiramisu until he serves it to the table. So we got a glass with the mascarpone and ladyfingers on which Carmine poured a mixture of coffee and Sambuca. After a few seconds, when the ladyfingers absorbed the liquids, he sprinkled cocoa powder on top (or maybe it was dark chocolate powder?). Anyway, both deserts were really good.
We really enjoyed our dinner and decided to return on our next visit, but 2 days later, after a reservation for another restaurant didn't work out, we found ourselves at Made in Sud again. This time we decided to try the pizza. My partner ordered the Spicy Salami pizza (€11.75) and I ordered the 4 seasons pizza (€14). We couldn't help ourselves and ordered a bottle of the house wine and of course 2 tiramisus for desert. The pizzas were very good.
I can highly recommend this restaurant! It is full with soul and good food. I wish we could visit...
Read moreIt is always hard to leave Italy, so much to appreciate. Therefore we are always looking for good Italian places to eat. Made in Sud by Napo is a great find. The welcome, the room, service, the wine and the food left us happy and satisfied. True italians loving to share their culture. From the quality of the setting to the wonderful tiramisu. The wine list is brief but chosen with care. The fresh homemade ingredients and presentation are excellent. The misto antipasto with wonderful meats, cheeses and olives, surprisingly good. The ravioli and gnocchi in delicate sauces and bread all made in the kitchen to the surprising tiramisu and cheesecake, all made with care and pride. - Bologna, Torino, Napoli, Lecce, the food at Made in Sud by Napo is as good as any we have enjoyed in those great cities. We are glad we are in Den Haag a few more days so we can go back and enjoy what these good people share. (I rarely write reviews but this place deserves to...
Read moreWe went here based on the reviews however it almost seemed asif the chef had a bad day or they switched chefs.
We had the beef carpaccio and octopus carpaccio which both had no flavor except for a lemon juice overload. Then we ordered a classic pizza and pasta carbonara. Thankfully pizza is always good but this one had nothing special. The carbonara was horrible though. It had no flavor, was absolutely not creamy and seemed nothing like a carbonara (see picture). I would have given three stars as the service was friendly but when we pointed out the dish was inedible, we got a free limoncello offered which we declined. Yet we were still served the limoncello and had to pay full price.
It is definitely not worth the steep price for simply near mediocre food.
Still 2 stars because the atmosphere was nice and...
