I've always had a good experience with this place, however we went there today and got what was called a lumber jack cake. We were told it was a bit like a muffin. When we ate it, it was like a raw cake, not cooked properly, and all runny, melting and greasy. We told the owner about it and instead of offering us another option, she went and got the cake lady who made it, to come over to us. The cake lady said it was supposed to be like that, so we continued to eat it. Then the owner came out to see how we got on, and said I hope you enjoyed it. If that was the case we wouldn't have asked about it. I was too surprised to even think of what to say. No apology. If you look at a lumber jack cake online they are moist but not half cooked. My cousin who I was with had her own cake business so knows how a cake is supposed to be. We are both business owners, and had it been our customers, would have offered a solution. It is important to listen to the customer. I have always been to this place when I'm Akaroa, however I will not be going back again. The cakes weren't even in a cooler cabinet on a scorching hot day. Word of mouth...

We recently dined at The Common for dinner and had a mixed experience. Despite the restaurant being crowded, the staff seemed understaffed, leading to some confusion with the orders. The waiter mistakenly served us food intended for other customers. Additionally, the coffee I ordered was not served until the end of our meal, so I had to take it home.

On the positive side, the food itself was delicious. We particularly enjoyed the pan-seared scallops and pan-seared salmon; they were cooked to perfection. Another highlight was the availability of toys for children, which kept our toddler entertained throughout the meal.

Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience in terms of food quality and the availability of toys for our child. We hope that in the future, The Common addresses the staffing concern to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience. We would definitely still consider visiting again when we find...

Today me and my wife went to this Cafe, we ordered some food and coffee, when we received our order, they gave me a coffee not in their Cafe's cup but in other's personal plastic cup that was already used, we realized it later. I was surprised, but i thousght may be thats their trend here.We went first time from christchurch and that was our first stop for refreshment. When I had coffee, the lady came to us and said oh that's my cup, may be that lady works in one of the shop near the cafe and she came to get her coffee. The Cafe staff came and said I will give you refund for the coffee and sorry by mistaken our staff gave you. Their service was ridiculous, how they serve customer with someone's used cup. We didnot go there to get refund, we went to enjoy our day. We really disappointed with their service. They were showing us attitude like they did very well ridiculous service. They spoiled our day with this...

I came to this cafe a couple of times during its opening week. Best cup of coffee in Akaroa, in my opinion. Usually come for the coffee which is still good. Today decided to try some cabinet food. Bacon and egg roll. Three small pieces of strip bacon which was really three strips of bacon fat. I returned the rolls but was told by staff that there is no replacement because they all have the same fatty strip bacon. So no hunger satisfaction here. They were only $10 each and I would be happy to pay more for better quality. Unacceptable to serve these rolls with up to 2cm wide strips of fat, reminds me of my Mum telling me about the bread and dripping sandwiches they had at school during the depression. Come on team, lift your game a little. Photo shows a reasonable piece beside the rubbish bacon. Not all strip bacon is created equal

It's wonderful being back for lunch here. I think it is a new place as it had a make over from the last time we visited. The food is fantastic and does not disappoint. The coffee is good too. It's worth to note that the avocado smash comes with really grainy bread (really nice but not everyone's cup of tea)... Not really a kids first option. So if you want them to eat, remember to tell the staff you want just normal bread. Alternatively, staff can make it an option for customers to select. Unfortunately, for our group of 5.. it's hard to hear each other. We sat inside this time. I reckon it's just my husband having early hearing loss 😅😆. It did make our lunch short as we couldn't really have any conversation. Overall, lovely place for coffee and food. Recommend 👍🏻 We'll be back.
