Food - ordered fresh scone with homemade jam and cream as advertised outside. Came as two(!) plain scones which were light and fluffy, delicious jam, cream and a packet of butter. 2 things here - one, would have been much nicer if butter had been in a dish like the jam and cream (for aesthetics and the environment) and two, the proportion of jam to scone was insufficient. But asked for more jam and was not a problem. Service - Was busy due to it being a rainy Sunday, everyone seemed to want to get out of the rain. A table was cleared for me and I was seated very promptly. Scone took slightly longer than I anticipated but arrived warm hence the wait. Aesthetic - Nothing to write home about, not a fan of the layout, the half wall between the bar/till area is not needed and would open the space up much more if it wasn’t there. Laminated sheets of paper on the wall which look slightly tacky and random shells on the walls which add nothing. Spinning cake display takes up too much room where a small table could be - also not needed. Booths are nice enough. Lovely plates. Some small changes and it could be better.

RATS. I'm a frequent flyer at Dixie Brown's when in town and I've dealt with this Maitre D and loved the experience. However. I ordered ribs and they were great. But as I started eating waves of this smell started. I thought I'd walked in something awful and checked my boots. Nope. I started wondering about fellow diners and I think they were wondering about me. I asked the waitress and she told me she couldn't smell anything. Total blank face. So I first thought I was imagining it, or it was wafts coming in off the beach. Maybe some sea life had died and the smell was drifting across? By now I can't eat the second half of my main. They offer me a doggy bag but my stomach is turned so I send it away. I'm still hungry though. I look longingly at the deserts and the waitress suggests shifting. She is still giving me the impression she can't smell a thing. So I take a sweet and go to the suggested table not far away. From the new table, I see along the mobility ramp, two bait stations and now recognise the smell as dead rat. Or rats. Because it was now very strong and I put at least half my desert aside. I called the waitress again and said "look I recognise that from farming, that's the smell of a large dead rat! You've got to check the bait stations or look under the desert cabinet because you've got a dead rodent and it's disgusting." 🫣 I believe they briefly checked. I gathered myself and went to the counter and told the people there again that there was a dead rodent and it was disgusting. The waitress at the till said "sorry, sorry" with no more behaving like it was in my head. She asked for and took $55 for the food, service, and space I hadn't been able to enjoy. I shouldn't have been asked for money under those circumstances. I still feel sick. I have to wash all my clothes. Rodent faeces and urine dry and get in the air, especially during decomposition. This carries Leptospirosis and is a health risk. The Maitre D was gruff to the point of rudeness. Where kindness and sympathy would've won a friend she came at me with "Look, we're well aware. We've looked in the bait stations and under the cabinet and there's nothing there. We think it's in the wood panels. We've got someone coming ok?!" That, with a defensive glare, was her response and I'm really disappointed. If she'd expressed sorrow this had happened and if people had been forthcoming about it to me I'd be less distressed. But they made me feel like noticing it made it my fault. Also in this situation the correct response is to close your doors and deep clean. This isn't OK.

Totally disappointing Dixie Browns. Wanted to take our family out for a nice birthday dinner and in the past have always had lovely meals but this time was utter rubbish sadly. Entree of Calamari and crumbed mushrooms were over cooked and tasted like the oil out of the fryer hasn’t been cleaned for a long time 🙁 Main Calamari was just as bad and tasted like we were just eating salt so unsure if that was the calamari on its own or combined with the sauce. The rice was not nice to eat at all. Sauce on the steak was just like one from the supermarket and ruined the flavours. I do believe they knew our meal wasn’t great as they kept avoiding clearing our plates when we had clearly finished, however the calamari wasn’t really touched at all so maybe looked like we were still eating. When paying the bill, we could have had a big moan but didn’t even get asked if we enjoyed our meal so decided not to make a scene just pay and go. A restaurant that used to be nice fine dining has now become just a pub type meal. Sadly this has left a bitter taste for us and will probably never return again.

Oh dear. It’s been a long time since I last ate at Dixie Browns, and it’ll be a long time before I do so again. I ordered the smoked salmon bagel and I asked for the scrambled eggs on the side. The menu said it came with “caper cream cheese.” The wafer thin scrape on my bagel tasted like cheese spread. There was zero seasoning, a squeeze of lemon would have been nice. Sadly I found the smoked salmon inedible. It was chewy, it was tough, it was stringy. It wasn’t pleasant. The eggs were well seasoned but over cooked. My friend had the Belgian waffle and bacon, with apple and ice cream. It was swimming in maple syrup which she declared a win. I want everywhere to be amazing. A culinary delight. I know that’s unlikely, but it makes me sad when somewhere falls so below par. The wait staff were pleasant and the pricing about average. I can’t say it offered value for money as all I ate was half a toasted bagel. Maybe it was just a rough day. But a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese should be doable for anyone. Even the absent Favourite Husband could have done this better.

My wife and I went to Dixie Browns for lunch a week ago. The location is very handy with outdoor seatings available. It was a bit chilly when we visited the restaurant so we took an indoor table. My first impression of menu was that it wasn’t cheap. But when the food was served, that really proved me wrong. The portions are very generous, even with fries. We ordered corn cake and fried chicken & waffles for our main dish and had truffles & parmasan fries added as a side dish. The corn cake was a bit dry so while it was tasty to begin with, it became hard to chew and swallow by the end. Chicken and waffles were delicious but perhaps syrup was a bit too much. Fries were our best dish for the day. Parmasan with fries cannot go wrong, and to add a hint of truffle to expand the scent, it was great. Coffees were good also. Staff were kind and attentive. I believe it’s a great family restaurant and I think it’s great for anyone wanting a casual dining experience.

I chose Dixie Browns to celebrate my Birthday. The restaurant is situated on the Marine Parade of Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, New Zealand, across the road from the main beach and a few meters away from the base of the Mount. This location and setting makes for a wonderful night out. As you walk in you are greeted by a cabinet of wonderful desserts tiered on a rotating stand. The greeting at the entrance was pleasant yet at the same time professional. My choice was the lamb Shank, which is my favourite at DB and my wife chose the half portion BBQ ribs while my son ventured for the full portion BBQ ribs. Dessert consisted of a Creme Caramel for me, the Lemon Meringue Pie for my wife and the Croissant Bread and Butter Pudding for my son. Everything was cooked to perfection, well presented, reasonably priced and with a first class service to boot. A walk along the promenade after the meal was a perfect end to an absolutely amazing meal.
