Spongedrop — Restaurant in Bay of Plenty

Very disappointing is an understatement.

My wife bought a cake for her 40th birthday, so it was a very special occasion, she was hesitant to order a cake as she makes AMAZING cakes, but because we were traveling, it was going to be complicated to make the cake and bring it to Tauranga, so she decided to order it online, she ordered a chocolate cake.

When we turned up at the shop, somehow they managed to stuff the order up and guess what?? They didn't have the chocolate cake she ordered and wanted, so the girl in charge very kindly offered to give us a vanilla cake with chocolate icing, my wife is very kind and gentle, so she decided to accept it, we then waited 30 minutes for the cake to be done, while we were there I had a chocolate raspberry cream brownie and my son had a macaroon, they were both DELICIOUS!, so we were really happy thinking the cake was going to be the same level.

After we sang happy birthday we cut the cake... wow I would give that cake 3 out of 10 and plus the experience and the waiting and the disappointment I am giving this shop 2 stars... not only me everybody thought the cake was under average... awful, nothing to do with the macaroon and the brownie my son and I had... so they really ruined a very special occasion for my wife... very, very, very sad and...

The cake I ordered was not good at all. Shocking to pay $120.00 for this kind of cake that has no quality and very tiny as well, I wonder why I received the mini one. Did not bother to ask its not worth spoiling my day. I expected it to be special but it was so plain. Honestly, the cake from countdown would taste a lot better. When I had the first bite, its just taste very cheap, that I would not want to finish the small slice. so sad, the cake was just a waste. I will stick to the cakery I know that takes pride on their cakes. Looks great on the website, that’s just common now marketing is excellent but the products are not. I hope they will address this concern. It’s not just right. The cinnamon roll I got from the cafe was delicious. wonder why the cake wasn’t? My daughter and I decided to start our day with a pastry and coffee however Spongedrop made this a very embarrassing experience. I don't like strong coffee and asked for a quarter strength Mocha. The barista then said she couldn't do this and proceeded to lecture me on coffee machines and how this worked and wanted to give me 1 shot, I then asked if I could have half a shot but that was a issue for her. I then said I would have tea. All of this occurred while the queue grew. My daughter saw that I was embarrassed and politely said we would cancel our order and we then went to the General café who were lovely. A good barista would be able to aim for half a shot and deliver a quality product which most cafes are able to do. A really disappointing experience that they couldn't think outside the box!
