Have been 4 times. First time we couldn't get a table, so waited almost an hour to take away.we ordered a beef noodle(牛肉麵), two braised pork mince on rice(肉燥飯), stinky tofu (臭豆腐), Taiwanese sausage with sticky rice ( 大腸包小腸)and Taiwanese chicken nuggets(鹹酥雞), the food portion was great, tasted pretty good but sticky tofu was not stinky at all. Then came with a friend for dinner one day, the restaurant went so much quieter this time, food still not bad though a few things we wanted on the menu weren't available, ba wan (肉圓) was pretty good but other dishes potions looked smaller this time. Due to the first take away experience, I ordered a deep fried squad (酥炸大魷魚) to take away for my partner, and once arrived home down the road after 5 minutes, opened the container with extreme disappointment. It was not even the size with my small hand, sadly sitting in the container, and it was too fishy that my partner didn't even want to smell it. Lately I got invited to the karaoke. Not bad, just a normal karaoke, a happy place to be. This time I ordered pork intestine vermicelli (大腸麵線), the potion was smaller than I was hoping for. The texture was great, but salty and not really an authentic Taiwanese flavour. Also ordered Taiwanese sausage with sticky rice(大腸包小腸), my friend also commented it was no exact Taiwanese flavour, and the size was rediculous, 根本是小腸包大腸, can't see the sticky rice from above.
Consistency and authenticity are the main problems. It emphasizes it's a Taiwanese restaurant but the owner is not a Taiwanese (but the original restaurant in Auckland is owned by Taiwanese apperently), so don't know he/she actually tasted real local Taiwanese food before. I am a stalwart of Taiwanese food and I would love to have a place to go eat authentic Taiwanese food often especially it's closer to my house. Unless the consistency and authenticity are fixed, I probably won't be back or recommend it to any of...
Read moreMy wife and I were attracted to this restaurant because it was advertised as a Taiwanese restaurant so we walked all the way there from our hotel when we visited Christchurch earlier this month. The location of the restaurant is a bit further away from the CBD but it’s not too far from the famous Cardboard Cathedral which we also visited during our stay in the city. It was well past the usual lunch hour when we finally found the restaurant. We found out that we were the only customers there as soon as we entered the restaurant but the young lady behind the counter was very friendly and welcoming. She was an excellent hostess as far as we are concerned. We were disappointed when we found out that the restaurant is not actually owned by Taiwanese even though it was advertised as one. We had lived and worked in that beautiful island nation for a number of years and have always loved it. We still travel there every now and then visiting friends and places, certainly one of our favourite overseas destinations. We order two different dishes to share between us, a beef soup noodles and a combination rice bento of some sort. The flavours and presentation of both were excellent even though we liked the noodles better, it was comparable to the good ones we have tried in Taiwan. The price of the two dishes were reasonable and whatever was missing from the food it was very much made up by the hostess’s friendliness and hospitality. She is a great asset to the restaurant...
Read moreThis is not at all authentic Taiwanese cuisine.
The food was subpar and lacking in too many aspects. The fried rice had terribly soggy rice that was hardly fried, as if the cook has never learned how to cook fried rice...
The tofu and aged egg dish flavour was okay, but did not look at all like the menu photograph. There wasn't a whole egg as presented in the menu. The hotpot lacked many of the additional items that come standard in a traditional hot pot so hardly had any ingredients inside. The braised beef with rice was tasty and had a decent amount of meat. But, unfortunately, it was also lacking the authentic flavour.
As for the drinks, they were terrible. The bubble milk tea was incredibly weak and watery, and the bubbles were old. The mango ice tasted like plain crushed ice with barely any flavor... Essentially, $11.50 to drink iced water!
The Karaoke room was okay, but lacked many songs in any language. The search function barely worked to find songs, especially in English.
It is unfortunate since we were looking forward to getting some yummy Taiwanese food again... I guess we'll have to wait until we visit...
