Black Forest Kitchen — Restaurant in Devonport-Takapuna

We ordered a custom Blackforest cake from Irina’s Blackforest Kitchen for my husband’s birthday, and we’re so glad we did! This was our first time meeting Irina, and right from the start, she was warm, friendly, and genuinely attentive to our requests. I had specific dietary preferences in mind—less sugar and no alcohol—and she was incredibly accommodating without compromising on the quality.

The cake turned out beautifully. It had a classic, nostalgic Blackforest flavor—rich chocolate sponge, fresh cream, and just the right amount of cherries. Because we asked for no alcohol (which is traditionally used to soak the layers), one layer was a little on the drier side, but we completely understood that trade-off, and it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment. The rest of the cake was moist, well-balanced, and not overly sweet, which we truly appreciated.

It was just the two of us celebrating, and this cake made the day feel extra special. Sharing a slice together felt like a little moment of joy, and it reminded us how meaningful small celebrations can be when done with love and care. I've been Irina's (Black Forest Kitchen) customer for a couple of years and the baking that Irina does (both sweet and savoury) is just delicious! My personal favourites among sweet things are the honey cake, the Bird's Milk (soufflé cake) and yummy sweet cottage cheese buns. Among the savoury things I absolutely love and highly recommend cheburek (deep fried pastry with meat), lamb and potato pie and chicken and mushroom quiche. Pastries with various filling are also super tasty!
