Chaos Cafe in New Plymouth has long been an icon among local cafes, and for good reason. With its electric and trendy atmosphere, this funky cafe has established itself as a go-to spot for delicious homemade food and top-notch Havana coffee. The interior is adorned with fascinating curios, creating an intriguing and unique ambiance. During my visit to Chaos Cafe, I had the pleasure of trying their mocha, which turned out to be one of the best I have had in a decade. The addition of real chocolate took it to the next level, leaving me thoroughly impressed. As someone who frequents various coffee establishments, I can confidently say that Chaos Cafe knows how to craft exceptional coffee beverages. Recently, after 20 successful years, Chaos Cafe underwent a change in ownership. Kerry Vosseler, the original owner, made the difficult decision to sell the cafe following a challenging year in business. One of the main difficulties faced was the struggle to find qualified staff. Vosseler expressed that at times, she had to hire individuals with no prior experience due to the limited pool of available candidates. Unfortunately, these challenges led to temporary closures of the cafe. Despite the recent changes, Chaos Cafe will always hold a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Its reputation for fantastic food, superb coffee, and a vibrant atmosphere will continue to attract patrons seeking a unique dining experience.

Stopped in for brunch at Chaos on the 1st of Dec around 11am. Every staff member we talked to was super friendly and welcoming. We had a quick chat with Mihi who was really kind and helpful. Mihi is definitely an asset to this cafe - service and friendliness is on point! We ordered the tomato soup with bread, the breakfast bagel and an oat milk latte. The latte was delicious - my partner said it was the one of the best coffees he’s ever had! 10/10 The tomato soup was super creamy and delicious, with warm crusty bread on the side. It was a good portion size and left us feeling really satisfied. The breakfast bagel didn’t disappoint. It was filling and the egg was cooked really nicely - we were pleasantly surprised as it was from the cabinet. It tasted really yummy and was fresh and toasty. They even give you a special bagel knife to cut it which is awesome! Came here after being recommended by a local and are so glad we did! On top of all this, the cafe has a really nice ambience. We will definitely return if back in New Plymouth.

Popped in over lunch for warm cheese scones, latte and tea. The staff member who served us was disinterested, rude and dismissive. Said we would have to wait for 10 min for a table. All fine so we asked for a takeaway instead. Coffee arrived cold and on opening our cheese scones, found they were stale and had not been warmed. Totally disappointing experience. Follow-up The owner, Elle, contacted me shortly after my review to ask for some feedback and I was remiss in not getting back to her. I appreciated this prompt follow-up and should have been more active, but life and business, got in the way. As such, my wife and I decided to give Chaos another try and had a tasteful, leisurely and well presented lunch. My wife loved the presentation of tea in a funky tea pot and milk jug! Staff were friendly, helpful in recommendations and quick in providing our meal. Amended my review from a 1 to a 5 as could not fault Chaos on our second try !

Having earlier seen the cafe buzzing for Saturday brunch, I was enticed to visit Chaos later in the day for a coffee and cosy up with a book. The Havana coffee sign, a tug of nostalgia to my previous life in Wellington.

I entered and was greeted at independent times by all 3 front of house staff, although clearly busy packing up after the lunch rush, I received great service and the staff were clearly well trained, and had their regular customers. The cabinet food looked almost too good to resist, and the cafe presented a well spaced out variety of seating options.

It was about 2pm and I ordered 1 regular sized mocha to have in - general prices for barista mochachinos are $4.50-$5.50 so I didn't bother checking the board for prices, as I knew what I wanted. So you can imagine my surprise to hear "that'll be $7" and indeed $7 came up on the eftpos machine, as well as $7 next to it on the menu, as I stole a quick glance before inserting my card.

Of course I was too shy to change my order after placing it and hoped it was a worth while investment! Just to be clear, all other coffees on the board were standard prices, just an unexpected $7 mocha.

My mocha was served with a Whittakers milk chocolate bar on the side, which although delicious and is clearly the reason for the marked up price of the drink, I didn't necessarily want a "loaded mocha", let alone to pay extra for it. Overall, a nice drink, perhaps the lesson here is for me to always read the menu and prices before ordering a coffee!

Otherwise, there is an opportunity to have a regular mocha on the menu @ $5, and offer an upgraded "loaded mocha" @ $7? Just an idea! I loved the cafe vibe and artwork relating to the Chaos before the big bang, good selection of food and from the business I saw at brunch must be a spot to try in the near future...

We visited over the king’s birthday weekend. It was a busy Sunday, we queued up, ordered and PAID our meals, after 5 minutes or so, the cafe manger came to us saying the transaction got declined( no declined receipt was given), without thinking I went to pay the bill AGAIN with another card. 2 days later(first business working day after the long weekend), I saw my bank statement that I got charged with the exact same amounts on 2 different cards, so I ring up chaos to enquirer regarding this matter with polite manner, but cafe manager couldn’t do much as the owner was on leave, so I emailed them with screenshots of my bank statements, all I got back was, this is not their fault/problem, it’s between me and my bank, nothing they can do about it. ( I did ring up ANZ bank prior and yes both transactions did go through). Anyway, I’m over it. moral of the story is always ask for receipts regardless whether the transaction is accepted or declined. By the way, the service really sucked, we had to stacked dishes from previous customers into 1 pile ourselves and my long black turned out to be EXTRA LONG BLACK, even after all our meals was finished it still hasn’t shown up, ended up asking for takeaway. What a...
