Stepping into the Old Bank Arcade always feels like embarking on a delightful journey through time, and my latest visit was no exception. This charming spot holds a special corner in my heart, offering a nostalgic haven away from the rush of modern life. Nestled in this beautiful building is Smith the Grocer café. What truly sets this place apart, is its wonderful staff, who consistently go above and beyond to ensure every visitor feels right at home. Among them, a Japanese waiter stands out, exuding warmth and charm with every interaction. For my culinary escapade this time, I decided to indulge in a classic smashed avocado on gluten-free toast, paired with a heavenly chai latte crafted with creamy coconut milk. Although the dish did not arrive promptly—my drink came first and after around 20 minutes, my toast followed—it was presented with flair. The smashed avocado was generously adorned with mushrooms, seeds, greens, and a flawlessly poached egg, promising a symphony of flavors in every bite. While the taste was divine, I couldn't help but notice a slight char on the toast, a minor hiccup in an otherwise stellar dish. On the beverage front, the chai latte stole the spotlight with its nice aroma and velvety texture. Made with luscious coconut milk, it struck the perfect balance of sweetness and spice, complementing my meal beautifully. Despite the toast's tiny flaw, my experience at the café was thoroughly delightful. Additionally, while relishing the flavors, I couldn't help but reflect on the price point. At around NZ$ 33 for both items, I found it to be a bit high, considering the...

It can be easily spotted on the roadside from a moving vehicle in normal traffic. Easily approachable. Well managed, organised and nicely maintained. Spacious and comfortable seating. Excellent ambiance. There is seating available in front of the cafe and for quieter environment, one may avail indoor seating. They serve great coffee with awesome presentation. Plentiful food options for those looking for edibles although choice for vegans and vegetarians is quite limited. Well timed, efficient and cordial service. The staff is pleasant and cheerful. Table service. Offers takeaways. Normally busy during peak hours. Good for quick visits. Reservations can be made in advance. PayWave facility is available at this location. Good for groups, celebrations, family, kids and catch-ups. Popular with travellers. Could not notice wheelchair accessible seating or high chair in plain view at this location. There is no dedicated parking area although ample street parking can be found around. Entrance is wheelchair accessible. Always enjoyed the experience. Read moreMy friends and I were sitting at a table in the foyer part of the Old Bank Arcade Building where Smith the Grocer has some seating.
Two of my friends had their own lunches but had ordered some drinks from the Cafe when a really rude member of the staff came up to us and said we had to move. I clearly had just bought a coffee as it was sitting on the table with our number and the other two drinks and some food for my two other friends were on there way. The lady said something on the lines of "I'm sorry to embarrass you but if you aren't customers you need to leave."
We clearly were customers and I found it really rude that she approached us in this manner. There were about 10 tables around us so it was completely unacceptable. We are all young professionals and all work full-time and we were treated as if we were naughty children. It was really unprofessional. None of us will be...
