Felt welcomed as soon as we walked through the door(by Emma) just made us feel relaxed immediately. Wiramu was our guide and lucky for us we were the only people on the tour! Such an incredible way to be introduced to the museum and history of Wellington. He is very knowledgeable and is passionate about telling you which definitely makes the tour more interesting! We got the package deal through Bookme but wouldve paid way more just for the tour - highly recommend, especially if you re short on time. The fish'n'chips (included) are from a local restaurant less than 2mins from the museum- just beautiful! The boat is big enough to accommodate over 60 people easily so wasn't too much of an issue a getting a seat. Make sure you go upstairs and sit at the front for the most amazing views! Wine and beer available on board for a reasonable cost. Somes/Magic Island is just magic, especially on a beautiful day like we had! Fantastic trip highly recommend for visitors and Wellingtonians alike!

A special event was advertised with free tickets in a low sensory environment catering to neurodiverse people. Hugely appreciated, wouldn’t have considered a trek into the city otherwise. My 12 year old son loved it, there were areas to relax, it wasn’t very bright and wasn’t noisy. There were tables set up to do cutting and gluing etc which he particularly enjoyed. My teenage daughter and her friend enjoyed the quiet areas but didn’t feel that it was particularly different and the colouring and cutting stuff didn’t have as much appeal to them. Such a shame the pay wave was down, I’d left my wallet in the car so wasn’t able to use Apple Pay to purchase the snacks and drinks which were very reasonably priced - my fault for not being better prepared. The staff were very warm and friendly. And we all appreciated the greeting that was done so gently and authentically.

I really enjoy history, therefore it is only natural that I also enjoy museums. While I have been to Te Papa, and absolutely enjoyed that behemoth of an experience, I really found this visit to be more intimate and personal. With many personal accounts and regular references to the people or whenua of the area, I found this experience to be very informative as well as breathtaking. I grew up in New Zealand, although down in the south island, but had been very aware of some of the significant events detailed here. The likes of the Wahine disaster, the Springbok anti-apartheid protests, and not forgetting the amazing mahi of Dame Whina Cooper, these displays made the stories very real and personal. Please visit this spot if you can, and perhaps throw a few dollars in the donation bin, there is a lot of aroha and history here. You will enjoy it.

My new favorite museum in Welly! We've been here for 7 years or so now and this was our first visit. We have always joked about the wild claims advertised outside this museum - "voted in the top 50 museums in the world" or some such. Now I'm having to eat 7 years of my own words. This place is great! The museum is well set out - just the right amount of information and interactive displays to keep adults and toddlers well entertained. There is a nautical theme running through the museum but it is just as much a history of Wellington. My favourite part though is the feel of the place. It is comfortable. Lighting and wood make the place seem really cosy. I just enjoyed being in the space. Don't be like us. Visit soon and visit often.

Forget boring museums, Wellington's Te Papa is a history buffet for your brain! Maori myths come alive with ancient treasures, then boom you're reliving WWII with interactive gadgets. Kids go nuts for the earthquake simulator (don't worry, it's gentle!), and the harbour views from the rooftop are Instagram gold. Seriously, pack your phone chargers! Overall, it's like a time machine on steroids, but way more fun. Just wear comfy shoes - the building's huge, and you'll want to soak it all in. Bonus points for the cool cafe with harbour views too! Highly recommend if you're in Wellington, even if you're not a museum person. It's like a giant playground for grown-ups, minus the tantrums (hopefully)

Engaging museum located in one of the amazing heritage buildings (former home of the Wellington Harbour Board) on the Wellington waterfront. Filled with exhibits documenting the people, events and history which shaped Wellington into the city it is today. In particular, The Attic has some interesting exhibitions to experience. Depending on how much detail you want to go into, you could easily spend a few hours at the Museum. Pair it with a visit to the NZ Portrait Gallery, which is a short walk away, and you have a solid half day of indoor activities. Great for families with a number of interactive displays on display.
