Wow! Haven't been this impressed for a long time. From booking our table online, through to paying the bill was just effortless. Service was attentive, not over bearing, and food was delivered in an extremely timely manner (like clockwork) . The food, their selection of wine, service levels and atmosphere made for a serious culinary experience, which is what you want when dinning out. Our experience began with the Mexican themed cocktails that were on offer. The passion fruit cocktail delivering an instant "smack in your face" attitude using heat and sweetness, where as the strawberry infused tequilla cocktail was a slow and sweet deadly combination (too easy to drink), but also an experience in a glass. For entrée we coupled the cocktails with fresh oysters that were delicious and that the strawberry infused cocktail complimented. For mains we selected the Scotch fillet (M/R) from the regular menu, and Salmon (from the themed Mexican menu), choosing a Syrah and Pinot Gris to accompany. HOLY MOLÈ!!! When I say flavour combinations this Chef has it on LOCK! (see photos) Nothing on either plate overpowered each other, so individual flavors remained for the diner to choose their combination on their forks... Each bite only elevating our experience. Couple with sips of wine in between took your tastebuds on another journey. It was AMAZING, and something that I always seek when dinning out. Both steak and salmon were cooked perfectly with crispy salmon skin always being a bonus. There was nothing to complain about. For dessert we selected the MMK key lime creme brulè and 2 takeaway coffees. The bruleè freshened the pallet and made for the perfect ending to our culinary journey. I saw some reviews that said it was on the expensive side, however I would respectfully disagree. You pay not only for the food, but also the service, atmosphere and experience that great dishes gives you. MMK has to be one of the best value for money restaurants I have dined in for a long time. I highly reccomend giving it a go. It's now going to be my go to next time I am in the area.

After a morning of snorkelling in the Tawharanui Marine Reserve, we were really famished and found ourselves in Matakana to search for some lunch. We decided to settle for Matakana Market Kitchen. They have indoor seating that gets a lot of light from the floor to ceiling windows that face towards a nice scenic little ravine in the back. You can also choose to bask in the sunshine at one of the tables on the outside patio. The menu is quite large and a mix & match of a lot of different types of dishes to satisfy from toasty, fruity, hearty, brunchy, or classic style. The service was good and the place wasn’t too busy at around noontime so we were able to enjoy a bit of piece and quiet. We settled for the chorizo & spud crush from the something brunchy section while my YEA opted for the pappardelle al pomodoro from the hearty side. The green goddess smoothie was quite refreshing after drinking some sea water during the morning snorkelling session. Both dishes came quickly and they tasted as described. It didn’t blow me away but it was done with skill and care. The potatoes were nice and crunchy and eggs poached so that they were runny. The pasta dish was satisfactory and the pappardelle was a ok el dente. The ragu sauce was good enough. We left with full tummies and more energy in the tank for the rest of day so mission accomplished.

Visually, great spot with a nice backdrop of the river. Pricing & Food, fair and affordable. I ordered the seafood chowder which was good size serving, creamy and fair amount of seafood. Ordered the 3 course kids meal, fruit salad (entrée) fish and chips (decent sized fish pieces) vanilla icecream and chocolate sauce. Which was also fairly priced. Service upon entry: I felt the lady on the entry table could be more approachable and at least make it feel like she wanted to work there or serve us. We were given menus and seated, however I felt rushed and like it was a drive thru situation. She could definitely do with a pep in her step. She failed to ask us how we wanted the kids 3 course meal, which resulted in me asking another waitress if I can receive the fruit salad and main at the same time. Regardless that this waitress was seated right behind us we were not served or approached by her after handing over the menu’s and taking our orders, which I’m actually grateful for as she definitely left a sour taste during our brunch experience. If our initial waitress had put more energy into her service and not acted like she had better things to do than serving us, I would have rated this place better. However reading another recent review below, it makes sense why she was not very welcoming to my son and I 🤷🏽‍♀️

First time dinning here for my birthday and my whole family and I are so impressed! We couldn't fault the food as it was honestly amazing! We ordered the snapper and scallop risotto and it was beautifully cooed, the rice grains were still whole and intact but it was tender and melt in your mouth. The consistency of the risotto was spot on, the snapper and scallops were cooked perfectly and and plenty of it on the plate. The seasoning was perfect, not too salty, not bland by any means and just rich and velvety, just delicious. Also o, we ordered the scallops with white wine, garlic butter and parmesan and it was just gorgeous to eat. We ordered some agria fries and polenta chips and they were both to die for! I'm a big hot chip fan and the agria fries were perfection - crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside and the aioli dipping sauce was really yummy with it. It had a nice amount of garlic in the sauce but not too garlicky. The polenta chips were absolutely life changing, cragly and crispy on the outside and slightly soft on the inside and it had bits of rosemary running through it and gave it a nice subtle flavour-just yum! I also had the kombucha tea which was yummy and it had raspberries and blueberries in it which was not only pretty but refreshing to eat after I'd drank all of it. It's the little touches like this that makes all the difference in the dining experience. The table was clean and set up nicely, the staff were very accommodating with giving us a table that's inside the restaurant but right in front of the glass doors that overlook the outside bit. We got to see the ducks outside and get some fresh breeze from outside from the comfort of sitting inside the restaurant. It was done on purpose by the friendly man that sat us to our table and we are very grateful. The waiters were attentive but not overly annoying, our 2nd load of drinks took a while but when we asked another waiter to check on it they got onto it right away and apologized which was no biggie at all. My family and I are so happy to find this place, the food is stunning and we will definitely be back again and again for all special occasions or just to splurge out. Also the portion size is great and not overpriced at all! We complemented the chef and the staff to a waitress and we hope this place does not ever change. I highly recommend this beautiful place. P. S. We live in Glenfield north shore and it's worth the 55...

Took my mum to my favorite Matakana restaurant for a weeknight meal out. I’ve been going to MMK for years and always loved it, never had a single complaint. I questioned whether it was a different chef because the food was just awful, but was told that they’ve been there a couple of years. I ordered lamb and my mother ordered fish & chips, I told the waiter (I think he was Sri Lankan) I was hungry so checked first on the portion size of the lamb. He said I would be best to get a side also. I ordered ‘garlic flash fried vegetables’ and a strange mix of Asian greens arrived, (not the standard restaurant vegetables such as courgette, carrot, aubergine etc) it was flavorless and unseasoned, and absolutely didn’t complement the lamb. I had driven up from Auckland and felt let down.

Now the lamb, it was tiny. I mean, I’ve eaten in plenty of Michelin starred restaurants and this main was similar in size, but that was all. The meat was overdone, tasteless and tiny. I politely questioned the portion size and was told it was 180gms. I would estimate it to barely reach 110gms.

My mothers fish and chips (I know, how could you mess that up): the fish was overcooked and dry, flavorless to the point we questioned if it was frozen fish. The chips were like leather, possibly on their 3rd dip into the hot oil. Surprisingly all that cooking and she still got...
