We entered your establishment at 1930 this evening with a team of four. We were asked by the male host if we had made a booking, as there were no availabilities for the evening. This was understandable, as I am a local & dine here quite often. I know to well how popular your establishment can become.

However what was not understandable is that there were three free bar seats & we were happy to wait for the fourth seat to become free, as this was occupied by a patron. Although I mentioned that we were happy to dine at the bar, the staff members response was that “it would be too tight”.

We were disappointed by the lack of empathy and was saddened to have my family experience this, especially of a place that I talk so highly of. I will definitely return in the future as this is not reflective of all my other previous experiences, however in this situation a little more focus on solutions and more compassion would have been appreciated. I’m sure that this team member would often excel and that your team deliver consistently high standards, however the interaction with the staff member in this moment was very...

With so many options in the area skip this place. They were rude, and served us gluten after a direct conversation about a gluten allergy. I try to keep most reviews positive, and the scallop on the sashimi plate was good, but the positivity ends there.

Spent the day recovering from being served non-gluten free soy sauce after specifically having the conversation with the server about a gluten allergy. If you are allergic to gluten, skip this place.

We knew the place closed at 3pm and rushed to get there by 2:40 pm for just a snack and a couple drinks. We were allowed to order, and requested that everything be gluten free. When the food arrived we tried to order a second drink but we were told the kitchen was closed.....it was about 2:55 pm at this point and we only tried to order drinks....again were told the kitchen was closed. The waitress was rude ... The food was below average for the price they are charging. The fish was average at best, and the rice was not sushi rice (just average white rice)

There is really no reason to go to this place with a street full of great options where the people are...

We were very disappointed with the service during our recent visit. There were only two of us, and we felt ignored compared to other tables. We had to walk up several times to ask staff to take our order, and even then, it was forgotten. Despite following up multiple times, no one checked in with us until a newer staff member kindly let us know that the chef had missed our order.

We were especially disheartened by the way the manager handled the situation. Instead of showing concern, they asked us to wait while other tables who arrived after us were fully served. It made us feel like we were not valued as customers.

What hurt most was the sense that we were being treated differently because we are Asian. We observed the staff interacting much more warmly with Western customers, while our concerns were dismissed. We hope this was not intentional, but it left a strong impression.

We’re sharing this feedback in the hope that it will help improve the service experience for everyone, regardless of background. Every guest deserves to be treated with respect and...

Kon'nichiwa 😜 Went to Aotearoa for some skiing, so whilst in ZQN was lucky enough to find Tanoshi and it was all rather lovely. Even though my mate and I didn't book, we were told we could come back in 30 minutes and we'd have a spot at the bar. The place was packed and busy as, but typically of the Japanese, it went without a hitch. My mate did the ordering - and we went with an otsumami approach - so we tried quite a few different dishes - and for the most - all LOVELY (just the prawn skewers (for me) were not FRESH FRESH). Everything else was lovely. Considering how busy they were the dishes came out quickly and we never waited long for our beers - I wish I could give 4.5 stars - but Ive been lucky with some FANTASTIC Japanese before it's hard to give 5 outta 5. Having said that - you'd be mad not to come to this lovely restaurant. Arigato PS - Some Zippy Spam included

We enjoyed the food offerings which included sashimi, pepper fried chicken wings, pork gyoza, yaki soba, prawn skewers, and grilled scallops. We had dassai saki. We did not enjoy the service at all. We had to get up 3 times to seek a server. We also had to do most of the table service ourselves because of how the table was situated. We had to ask for anything from more napkins to fresh plates. We were told that the restaurant needed us to vacate the table in 10 minutes. We were aware of the restaurant’s time limit. We looked to order another sashimi to cap off our meal. We were told by the server that we could not. She then said, let me check. She ended up bringing it. The lack of competent service in itself made the experience stressful. Note that we remained at the restaurant for at least 10 minutes after we paid and vacated the table and no one had yet filled it.

Tanoshi is a relatively busy restaurant in Queenstown which does an excellent job caring for its food. Its sashimi, scallop and meat options were the highlights but they’re Gyoza is also satisfactory. We found on our second visit the food quality to have decreased, so i recommend visits in the weekend where it seems a separate chef works with increased quality control. On that first visit though, I could easily say it is in my top 10 list of best Japanese restaurants in New Zealand. The service is a little slow but its fairly ordinary for this type of small specialised restaurant. Booking 1-2 days in advance is highly recommended as queues can form on its opening time at 5pm. In all, a fairly well made restaurant, and its chef’s choice course for 55$ per person is a real good price for what you get.
