Was here solo on a Thursday evening and Sunday lunch time. Both occasions were quite quiet. Well decorated, clean. If I had a date and we wanted Chinese, this place would 100% be on the list.
Their menu suggested a focus on a specific set of dishes, and only had one choice for vegetarians and vegans (this was confirmed with me when the dish arrived, and as I did let the server know I don't eat meat, maybe you'll want to check with them before ordering). Interestingly, it's also one they were willing to put their name on it. The sizzling in the vegetable claypot dish you see wasn't just for show - it's easily one of the best I've ever came across.
When I went back for a second time, I really wanted some fried rice, and they were accommodating to do the chicken fried rice for me without the meat (and charged the same price). As I actually asked for a vegetable fried rice (not on the menu), you'll need to see the photos to decide if it'll be worth it for you. What I got though was also delicious, full of flavour, great "wok hei", and didn't have lumps of "un-fried" rice.
It is a shame there aren't more options for veggies and vegans.
Their service felt apparently friendly. I didn't even need to ask to get my tap water. Staff spoke Mandarin and some English. Despite being on a short trip to Oslo, I went here for a second time as I really wanted to see consistency in the experience they delivered - I now question how genuine some of the recent-ish negative...
Read moreMeiWei came highly rated on Tripadvisor. I have been to quite a few eating places in Oslo and know what to usually expect. The first impression of MeiWei was over the phone. Nice phonecall could accommodate us on short notice 2 families of 4 adults, 2 toddlers. Despite the norwegian speaking on the phone we felt like they were surprised when we came. The one that greeted us apparantly did not understand Norwegian and fetched a different person. Service from there out was actually very good. The male waiter was especially helpfull but I think he was afraid I would complain about the One chinese black chilli in my food. So spicy i had to stop eating for 5 minutes which felt like 15 min. The food was tasty but the beef my wife said did not taste like beef but like minced meat. She ordered crispy duck ...with wrappers. We both felt it was waaaay overdry..the great sauce was powerless in saving it...like it came out of the oven 5 days ago and had been placed in a dehumidifier for 5 days before being put into an air fryer. It was crispy...but not in the right ways. Hard and chewy duck is not ever nice to eat. My wife loved the mango/coconut fromage dessert...and it was yummy. My creme brule was also good. Proper deep fried banana and icecream was a hit with the kids. So. final verdict would be good service, below average hotmeals, really great desserts.
Just warn the eaters about the chinese surprise next...
Read moreAwesome dishes!!! I did enjoy their premium 4 Retter (4 Courses) which consisted of crispy peking duck with wrap as starter, mongolian beef as main course 1, seafood pot main course 2 and dessert consisting of fresh fruits with sorbet.
For crispy duck, looks can be deceiving. Even though the duck looks pulled, it actually tasted heavenly and full of flavor. My number 1
For mongolia beef, brought memories of my time while I was at China. Spicy yet deliciously satisfying. Tempted me to order more rice. My number 2.
Seafood Pot Spicy. Didnt enjoy this one as there was one ingredient that really tasted fishy well obviously it was seafood but fishy that i didnt like. My last on the list
Dessert. Passable nothing really special since this was all just fruits and sorbet. Could have sprinkled something like crumble berries.
All in all, i think the price was reasonable. I would have changed seafood pot with something else if possible.
The staff were superb and very accommodating!!...
