We were a bit disappointed with the food; first time in Arequipa but not the first one in Chicha. It started with a juice of chicha de X and the waiter describing it as acidic and not sweet at all. The juice was too sweet and far from being acidic. We could not feel the fermentation. First disappointment. We then tried the chebiche de erizo, which was totally unexpected and a really excellent surprise to find erizo, fresh and flavory. We definitely recommend this appetizer. One note though... too many onions, way too many. As a main dish we tried the local "camarones" or river shrimps. I tried that for the very first time in Congo, Africa and their taste reminded me of those days. Absolutely delicious. The portion is generous for the chupe de camarones and feels like a real meal. The soup tastes really good. The celadores de camaron is an antique dish where shrimps are served cold which brings a very different flavor... really nice as well. Note that the portion is more appetizer size. Finally we ordered a grilled octopus served with a chimi-churri sauce. The mix of flavors was interesting and original. Unfortunately the octopus was not soft... kind of hard and chewy in the center. I had much better octopus... hoping this was a one-off. -- The place has a good vibe, clean setup and not too noisy even when full. We ate a luch time during the week days and mostly locals. -- In overall the experience was good but this is the first time.we had some upsets with one of Gaston Acurio's restaurants. This is not a cheap place compared to any other restaurants in Arequipa or Peru, but you will get a service and dishes prepared like nowhere else.

I booked Chicha to celebrate my wife’s birthday during our one-month stay in Peru. Given the renowned name by Gaston Acurio, I expected this dinner to be one of the highlights of our experience and it was the complete opposite. First, our waiter Mario seemed extremely anxious and overwhelmed by the amount of tables he was attending which I can understand but when he made a mistake on our order his reaction to our correction was not acceptable as he got angry, murmured something under his breath, did not apologise, and became passive aggressive from that moment. Even when it was time for my wife to receive a dessert with a candle for her birthday, he simply placed the lit dessert on her side and walked away in an ungracious manner. But even as the service was not up to standard, the food was simply unacceptable. My wife and I ordered the Chupe de Camarones (which is an Arequipa staple!) and we both ended up food poisoned with my wife throwing up (and more!) the entire night. It was a horrific experience one that ruined her birthday! If you’re thinking about going here beware! There are better restaurants around the main plaza. Heck! You might be better off ordering from the corner street vendor. A total disaster! Also, I sent my feedback directly to the restaurant explaining what happened and there was zero response.

I found this a little disappointing for a few reasons. Having not been able to get in to the Lima restaurant, I was keen to come here and try some of Gaston's food. The chupe Andino was nice and had pops of flavour that I enjoyed, having not had anything similar before. I had no serviettes or cutlery apart from a spoon to eat the corn with which was a hassle. I then had the pulpo a la brasa, and I honestly can't understand why this had no flavour, even with olives and capers in the dish. The chimichurri had zero flavour which I don't understand how that's even possible and if I was blindfolded, I would never have guessed that the octopus was grilled. It was sadly an oily, flavourless dish. My side plate, bread basket and butter still remained after the main was cleared even though I'd finished before the starter arrived. I also waited to be offered deserts but the offer didn't come. I so wanted to have a great experience here, but sadly I didn't.

Time for chef Gaston to do an audit of this restaurant. My wife ordered one octopus dish, and didn't realize she got a different, more expensive one until the bill arrived. She found the octopus had a strange layer of sinew on the outside and was very chewy. I ordered the Triple Picantero. Both the pork and chicken seemed to have been deep fried, and were dry with little flavour. The stuffed pepper was fine, but nothing outstanding. Our waiter gave off that attitude like he had worked there forever, and was better than the guests. His service was well under par for such a highly popular restaurant. He never even bothered to inform us of the specials, that we only noticed on a board after ordering. Although still a bargain by Canadian standards, we have been in Peru for over a week, and have had far better meals with much better service for much less money. Sorry, but you can find better in Arequipa.

I booked a table at 21:00 Monday 13/01/20, I was there 5 minutes before, they took to my table, the restaurant was not full, I got the menus, I asked the waiter advise between the lamb and the duck, he suggested the duck, I got my drinks, the bread ((a bit dry)) and the butter, after 35 minutes waiting, I got some fried corn as a snack and he said that my dich was coming very soon, total waiting time it was 50 minutes, there was more onions and bones then the meet in the duck leg, it seems they had him on bikini diet. I ate so quickly and I asked him for the check. I've seen the waiters handling the feedback questionnaire, but he didn't deliver it to me as he did with other tables, he gave the check and kept that one in his hand. Too much name for nothing. I had away much better ducks then that. Not a good experience after all I've heard.

From the same group that brings us Astrid Y Gaston, Chicha suffers the same fate giving us great cocktails and starters but when it comes to the mains, they were slightly disappointing. We had Chicha, Basil and Ginger Chilcano, both were excellent. Starters were the highlight of the dinner with excellent Prawn Ceviche, Delicious and sensual Sea Urchin with Scrambled Eggs on Toast and Peking duck-style Guinea Pig. Out of 4 main courses, we truly only enjoyed 1 of them which is the Lamb Fettuccine. The Osso Bucco Ravioli was a bit gimmicky while the Chupe de Camarones was not as flavorful as the one we had for lunch over at Inkari. The special seafood stew with rice left one of my friend with an upset stomach. Desserts were decent which the chocolate dessert was the best while the local Peruvian sampler was only so so.
