Summary of our experience here was really disappointing and traumatizing. My friend got arms sprained bec the chair suddenly cracked n dropped to the floor. Good thing my friend got good reflex and did not fell to the ground. Can you imagine if this happened to an elderly person? , after this happened, I asked for the manager, but before the manager came, the server offered my friend another chair but that same chair ( pls see photo) also has crack already on the side. This just shows poor quality of the chairs considering it is a newly opened restaurant and they still have soft opening banner placed outside. The Japanese owner was there but he just instructed a guy supervisor to assist us.
Before this incident, we noticed the rice served on our order of Kaisen Chirashi was loose and not the seasoned vinegared sushi rice, so after finishing the toppings, we asked for the supervisor ( same local guy supervisor ) and asked him why it is so loose n look like ordinary steamed rice. Couple of minutes later he returned and related to me what the Japanese chef told him, he said the chef explained that the rice for chirashi is just steamed rice that is why it is not sticky at all. Maybe if they put Kaisen don in the menu, I would agree but the one on their menu clearly says Kaisen Chirashi .. since, the supervisor took away my unfinished kaisen chirashi, I asked what he would offer to replace, i was shocked when he told me " kung ano po itsura ng kinuha ko sa nyo, ganun din ipapalit namin." Meaning he would just replace it as is. I just felt as a supervisor or manager he could have done better. It was my first time to eat a chirashi wherein rice is so loose. The sashimi were thin. But, good thing is when it was served back to us, the chef had added a little toppings ( unlike what the supervisor told us).
We ordered for UBE MATCHA drink which took forever to arrive. When we asked for the bill already, suddenly the server remembered and went to get the drink.
An order which belonged to another table was placed on our table
We were told by a server they don't have house tea or complimentary tea but when we told them the staff outside told us they do serve complimentary tea, that's the time the server went to check and told us they have.
The staffs outside actually discourage us saying the waiting time is very long, but actually we didnt wait that long to get in .
Service in general still needs a lot of improvement. The food served was fresh in fairness but serving not generous.
The foods we ordered .last night were: 1.Uni Tempura - this is unique and taste is good. Just be careful bec it has some hot juice inside when you bite .
Agedashi Tofu - it is ok. Not special
Natto maki -natto serving not enough But taste wise is ok.
Kaisen Chirashi - the sashimi toppings are fresh and good but thinly sliced . The rice is not seasoned vinegared rice! It is just steamed rice.. ratio of rice to toppings not proportion, you will feel they gave a lot of rice and toppings not enough.
So, overall, we are not satisfied with our experience, mostly bec of the safety issue, the chairs are really questionable. The way they handle situations, customer service needs a lot of improvement. Considering the Japanese owners are there. They did not even bother to check how we were doing personally after...
Read moreOriginally intended to dine in Manmaru but given the long line we figured to try Edoya across the street. There was no line to be seen and upon entering the ambiance was colorful and bright. That sums up the best parts of the restaurant.
Moving on to needs improvement portion, Edoya was quick to seat (four) us given the abundance of vacant tables. We ordered two Rosu (Katsu set), one Special Salmon Aburi Roll (Maki), one Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll (Maki), One Kaisen Chirashi, and one Agedashi Tofu.
In my mind since their direct business is Manmaru, Edoya must be equal or better to the competition since it is on average two hundred pesos (PHP) more expensive.
After ordering I noticed that no condiment provided and the gap beside the table was very dirty. A few minuets the Agedashi Tofu arrived. The tofu was firm and soft with a good sauce to match which was a good start. Twenty minuets had past and the Kaisen Chirashi had arrived, and it was was underwhelming. Despite the high price tag the sashimi was smaller in portion, only one per kind instead of two compared to its rice. After forty five minuets and a follow up the first Rosu katsu set had arrived. This time it was half the size of the average Yabu (Restaurant) serving. The included miso soup was its only saving grace. Three more follow ups later the Special Salmon Aburi and Spicy Tuna Tempura Rolls were served. Same trend it was a minuscule portion with a high price tag, and this time the tempura batter was raw on the inside. Two more follow ups for second order of the Rosu Katsu set and to no avail. Our band of four friend had finished our meals except the one who ordered the second Rosu Katsu set. The customers’ tables beside us had alredy changed thrice before our orders were almost fulfilled. We had to cancel the Rosu Katsu set and literally ordered Manmaru via Grab Pick up. Very poor service and management on Edoya’s side.
Paying was another ordeal, going to the counter to pay via card, I overheard the servers/hosts were confused on table seven as they poorly tracked the order and the payment of whichever customer had dinned there. No wonder there was no line outside and there are plentiful slots indoor Edoya.
Verdict: Rating Edoya 1 out of 5 stars. The ambiance is the only reason why I give it a once star. The service is one of the worst I have experience and reviewed thus far. Food is too expensive for the portions and the quality. If you are tempted by the social media craze, trust me don’t come here because there is a reason why Manmaru has a long line and packed tables while...
Read moreUPDATE with PHOTOS BELOW. The ridiculously small, kiddie size sukiyaki is Edoya’s. The big one is from a small Japanese restaurant along Pablo Ocampo. Edoya owners, please compare your P999 bowl, to the P840 one that I had; huge portion, more toppings, better ingredients. I should get a refund. DO BETTER EDOYA!
Let me start by saying that service was excellent. The staff was attentive, friendly, and efficient. The food itself was good, nothing unique or extraordinary; but it met my expectations of a good Japanese restaurant. We got gyoza for an appetizer, my wife had the tonkotsu ramen, and I ordered the sukiyaki. This is where the two star rating is coming from. For P999, the portion was very small, as in kiddie size bowl small; very much NOT WORTH IT. Don’t get me wrong, the sukiyaki was good; the broth was flavorful with that sweet salty goodness, the beef was tender, the soft tofu well prepared, the mushrooms gave it that earthy umami goodness, and the noodles were al dente. But for the meager portion, it’s definitely not worth it. Save your money and order two ramens instead. The tonkotsu ramen was also good, with the portion size as expected. I would have given this establishment the full five stars had the sukiyaki come as big as the ramen. It wasn’t even hot enough to scald the egg, the yolk broke up, but the albumen just remained floating on the beef and broth. And there was barely two forkfuls of glass noodles in the bowl. Very unsatisfying. I’ve had bigger servings for half the price. Again the service staff was great, I would come back for that, but I will definitely not recommend the sukiyaki for its exorbitant price and meager size, NOT WORTH P999. The rest of the menu, I’m willing to come back and try. I might even revise the two star rating when I get a chance to eat here again. That said, the restaurant is clean, bright, the interior well-appointed, and doesn’t have that creek smell that pervades the Makati area. Parking is very limited so it’s better to walk there or just Grab. I will still enjoin everyone to try EDOYA, just not that...
