Sometimes even if you're rooting for a place to do well , you just have to accept that change is inevitable.
Was a fan of Som's ever since it sprouted up more than a decade ago. I used to travel to Bangkok almost every other month for business. I even used to extend my stay by a few days just to eat so I know how Thai food should taste like. Although I found the majority of what Som's offered to be on the sweet side even before, eating here was a welcome change from the normal restos that I usually frequented.
I was excited when I read recently that Som's had new partners and just relaunched. Sadly, my experience today was very disappointing. The tom yum was just ok. The flavor was there but there only 4 pieces of smallish shrimps in the broth. There were also bits of button mushrooms and nothing else. The som tam was good. Very spicy. But again there werent even peanuts nor any sort of meat like "hibe" at the very least. The red chicken curry was very flavorful. But I wasn't even 1/4 into my rice and there was nothing left to scoop up. I finished the remaining 3/4 cup of rice just using the curry sauce and the tom yum soup as ulam.
Really hope Som's improves. I saw a billboard in Robinson's Magnolia where they plan to open. Hope by then they fix whatever they...
Read moreThis place is a good place if you want to experience Thai cuisine. Their "Laksa" is so good yet affordable. May pagka-creamy ang soup pero hindi nakakaumay 'yong coconut milk (gata) n'ya. We also tried padthai, and it's so good for me. You can choose among chicken, pork, or seafood if you want padthai. Kratongtong and chili squid are also good to try.
As to their place itself, they don't have their own parking space, but you can park nearby on the side of the streets around the area. They have tables and chair for dine-in, and they have child-friendly seats inside. The dining area is air-conditioned, but not that cold. Their bathroom and sink are clean enough. They have open space upstairs with an umbrella, which is no longer accessible for customers.
They have friendly staff and cook, and according to one of them, the business is owned by a pinay who married a Thai husband.
Lastly, if you don't have time to go here and don't want to get stuck in traffic, this restaurant is available on Grab Food.
I enjoyed...
Read moreDirections and Ambience: I got a little lost and confused because Zomato said the place is at Gloria Street and Google Maps at Enrique Street. Unfortunately, following the latter first indeed got me lost, but I already sent Google a pin update request. Just remember is at "Gloria Street." The hole-in-the-wall vibe is apparent and I really felt like entering someone's house.
Quality: Because the Spring Rolls weren't available, I just had a Thai Tea for takeout. It was served in a mundane paper cup, making me miss the times when they served in plastic bottles. Lid was loose and the beverage had too much ice, lessening the sweetness. It probably would've done them justice if I stayed and tried their...
