Read moreI’m a foreigner from the US enjoying my first trip to the Philippines. The culture is very different in the best possible way. Most places I have visited have been affordable with good food and better service. This was easily the most expensive restaurant I’d been to, which really isn’t an issue for me. The food was average, which again, could be overlooked. But when the food is expensive and average, the service needs to be good, and unfortunately that was not the case. We spent over 2000 pesos for two apps, one entrée of ramen and two drinks. Most places have been 1700 or less for an app, two entrées and two drinks. The service system here was very cool and convenient, but we had to hit the “Inquiry” button twice to get the server’s attention. When we did, we asked for a small bowl to make sharing the expensive ramen easier, and the look we received could only be described as indignation.
I had planned to order another dish because I’m here to have new experiences. I had planned to order dessert for the same reason. I had planned to leave a big tip, as I usually would. The average food and the expensive price could have been ignored if the service matched that of most other places I’ve been. However, without a single smile upon the faces of its workers, Yayoi lost my immediate patronage as well as any in the future.
A Note for Foreigners: Not only is the food expensive, but this is the first place I’ve been that serves tap...
Read moreVery reasonable pricing. 200-400 pesos, but mostly hovering around the 200 - 300+ mark for the main courses/entrees. Their specialty appears to be chicken-based Japanese dishes. Expect the usual fare of ramen, sushi, katsu, katsudon, oyakodon, gyudon, etc. If you're not feeling all that adventurous and want something familiar from Japanese cuisine while getting small tweaks that prevent those age old dishes from getting too stale then this is a good place to start.
As far as I know, the waiting list isn't all that overwhelming and turnover isn't too bad. Their specialty dish was the one I tried a nice tweak on karaage that puts an unusually good sauce that can be likened to a far improved takoyaki sauce with a bit of mayo slathered onto juicy, moist, and yet crispy pieces of fried chicken. The quality of the rice is far better than can one would reasonably expect with them being sticky yet firm, and able to hold their consistency even when exposed to the sauces.
Can't really say too much of the rest of the food since I wasn't able to try as many as I usually do, but this restaurants specialty dish is definitely worth a try even for those who've experienced authentic...
