So...I walk into my favorite place on the planet for a Reuben. (Seriously, what they give you in NY or LA doesn’t even come close—believe me.) I’m all set to order my usual when I overhear Mrs. Broda whispering something to Chef Broda. Intrigued, I pause mid-order as she turns to me with a sly smile and says: "Jutro premiera naszej nowej kanapki, która przez jakiś czas była rozwijana w tajemnicy w kuchni testowej." Something about how their new secret sandwich, crafted in their test kitchen, is dropping on Krakow tomorrow. And guess what? They invited me to try it.
I didn't want to because that wasn't the sandwich I dream about, but she literally twisted my arm to try it—I'm set on my Reuben.
How could I resist? I gave in.
And what they presented was nothing short of genius. Why? Because I couldn't put my finger on anything that ever tasted quite like it...anywhere on earth. It seemed like expertly prepared kimchi—bright and fresh without anything overpowering. And it was mixed with a garlicky white sauce that sneaks in the fat and richness so seamlessly you don't even know it’s there.
It was exactly as it should be. His approach to the secret sandwich is so refined that when I took my first bite, I literally started screaming. It was absolutely delicious. It was something about the way the white sauce subtly elevated the meat, adding depth without stealing the spotlight. And the arugula (a clever trick found elsewhere on their menu) propelled this sandwich straight up through the roof. Expertly balanced, and a familiar yet utterly unique flavor experience that I couldn’t quite compare to anything else anywhere. How often does someone give you that?
What's interesting is that Mrs. Broda practically had to twist my arm to try it; I never would have otherwise. I live for that Reuben when I'm elsewhere. But let me tell you: the new secret sandwich...
Read moreI almost choked because I ate the sandwich too fast, as it was so delicious. I highly highly recommend this place. This was my first time eating pastrami and it was so tasty! I had the Reuben in its smallest size and it was a glorious sandwich! The meat was tender and delicious, the sauce complimented it perfectly, and the vegetables gave a nice crunch. The cheese was perfect! The most honest cheddar I’ve met. Don’t worry about overloading the sandwich- it’s well toasted and wrapped in deli paper to keep it contained. They smoke the pastrami and roast the beef respectively each day so the food is fresh and the tenderness is the proof. The only sandwich I’ve had where every bite is glorious from midsection to crust.
The owner is the chef and after attempting to order in polish, she switched to English for me and walked me through the menu. I asked for a recommendation and she immediately countered that the whole menu is good. After eating, I must agree. They even have vegetarian options. They accept card or cash here. There is something special about a restaurant that hones their concentration on one dish like brodas does.
This restaurant is takeout but just outside, there is a beautiful plaza in the historic Jewish quarter of Krakow to enjoy your food. I had one eye on the grill where they toast their meat and the other on the lively passerby.
I highly recommend this as the best food in kazimierz and implore anyone reading...
