Wiejskie Jadło — Restaurant in Krakow

This restaurant has by far the best Polish food I've ever tasted!

My partner and I visited Krakow for the first time last week and we were on the lookout for a place that did simple rustic Polish food, and Wiejskie Jadło absolutely did not disappoint. It's a little bit out of the way of the main street and you have to go down a little alleyway to find it, but it's so worth it as it's cosy and intimate and away from the main street.

(It is all outside seating but it just added to the overall ambience. It rained quite heavily when we visited the first time but the canape kept us dry and the rain only added to the overall cosy vibe.)

We ordered our mains and the waitress very kindly brought out a free starter to share - a board of bread, smalec (which is lard but tastes very different to how it does in the UK, surprisingly really nice!) and some large pickles. Really fresh and tasty!

Our mains came out really swiftly and we didn't have to wait long at all, but we wouldn't have minded since the place is so beautiful and has a lovely atmosphere. I would highly recommend getting the traditional hunter's stew (or in Polish, Żurek) and the pierogis with meat, really substantial and the portion sizes are very impressive :)

The staff couldn't have done enough for us and they speak immaculate English, they even have a whole menu in English to put your mind at rest. This is the perfect place for anyone visiting Krakow from an English speaking country who wants to try traditional Polish food without getting overwhelmed or confused by what to order. The prices are incredibly reasonable, we only spent the equivalent of £30 on almost a three course meal with drinks!

We even went back a second time the night before we were due to fly back to the UK and to top off the whole experience, they even had a lovely rose lady in traditional Polish dress circulate the tables selling roses which we were all too happy to purchase from :) One rose for only 19 zloty!

I was really looking forward to trying traditional Polish food at Wiejskie Jadło, as I’m visiting my hometown after years of living abroad and have been missing authentic Polish flavors. Unfortunately, it was a massive letdown. I ordered “gołąbki” in mushroom sauce, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I ate something so bland. The sauce had split and was extremely oily, making it even less appetizing. To make it worse, the food was served lukewarm at best.

There was no check-back from the staff to ask if everything was okay, which wasn’t surprising, as they seemed more interested in standing around, chatting at the counter, and scrolling through their phones. It also felt like they were selective about which guests they gave attention to. While the tables around me received recommendations and complimentary appetizers, I got none of that treatment. As a male in my early 30s, it seemed like I wasn’t their “target demographic” for decent service.

It was extremely expensive we had this old expired food and I didn’t finish it cause I felt guilty, so I guess I mean they guess we had to pay 😒 for it so yeah we wanted to sit in but the lady was like “ here sit there or no where else” there was an inside tho seating diner but I had this dessert it was apple pie with ice cream the ice cream was alright but it was suppose to be hot not cold I guess I like both ways but they don’t know maybe I don’t so I’m telling the truth I recommend not going there it’s a waste of time and money the service was alrighty but still awful ! I am so deppressed and mad this was such a waste of everything. We paid 300+ and it wasn’t worth it also the soup I got was very bad. The food looks kind of good but trust me it’s bad.
