I’m feeling generous so I gave it 2 stars. Well tonight proved that you should not go on online reviews to decide where to eat. All the reviews I had read suggested this place would provide decent food, good service and a pleasant dining experience. How wrong could I be. The initial impression was not good when we walked into the restaurant, with loud Abba music playing, and the 70s feeling didn’t end there. We were given a glass of Madeira wine on arrival without being asked if we wanted it. The waiter was a bit overbearing and trying to be nice , more of this later. I ordered the house special Scabbard fish, which tbh I’ve never eaten before although I’ve seen it on sale. My beloved ordered pork with mustard sauce. I ordered a half bottle of wine which the waiter said should be allowed to breathe, god knows why as it was a cheap red which was for for glugging. When the food arrived it came with aluminum plate covers, very reminiscent of canteen food. First impressions not good;potatoes with eyes, frozen carrots, and a watery sauce and a tiny amount of fish. The food was practically tasteless and uninspiring, made worse when the waiter poured the wine into my glass up to the brim, which for me is a cardinal sin. When he returned to ask how the meal was we both said only ok. And when he asked why we told him. At this point his attitude changed and he became abrupt and rude, for example my wife said her pork was tough to which he replied “ it’s pork meat what do you expect” Fawlty Towers at its best! After complaining the manager tried to placate us with more free drinks which we declined. The only saving grace was that they didn’t charge us for the pork meal , but to charge for one meal was robbery , given the quality. My dog wouldn’t have given it a second sniff. Verdict, avoid unless you like retro food at...
Read moreThis is another restaurant found from TripAdvisor, fork and Google. So thanks to all my fellow contributors. This was easy to find on the main road. We were met nicely on reception our table booked through fork was ready and waiting for us, with our name attached to it. We were immediately greeted with glasses of madeira, followed by menus. They did not push the drinks menu at us, we had to ask. Neither did they push the water and bread at us, which was a welcome relief. The menu was typical of the island. I had the cataplana, which I googled to find was a fish stew, well actually the cataplana is the vessel in which it is cooked. The stew contained muscles, shrimp, prawn, clams, octopus and limpits. Served with rice. Very nicely presented. My partner went for the stone cooked salmon. Which essentially you cooked yourself to your own liking. All who had a stone cooked menu were provided with a bib to stop the spitting of the cooking getting on your clothes, quite a nice and unique touch. The one very small downside was the carrots, they were either frozen or over cooked, but hey a small downer and one that should not stop you using this very nice restaurant. The staff and owners were very attentive obviously trying to make a real go in very troubled covid times. The ambience was nice with ABBA in the background. Our meal was finished with a further madeira. Easy to recommend this...
Read moreThis is a very mixed review. When they got the orders right, the food was OK to Good. Mains and the prawn cocktail were good. My starter ( shrimps with garlic ) was a bit overcooked though.
Service was warm and friendly but unfortunately, the details of one of our orders for someone who has a food intolerance, after an initially helpful conversation with the waitresses and a check with the kitchen, got forgotten about in the kitchen and we ended up with a plate of food that she couldn't eat.
To be fair, once this was pointed out to the waitress, they acknowledged their mistake and quickly rectified the problem, and offered us a drink on the house to make up for it, but if they'd made a similar mistake with someone with a serious allergy rather than an intolerance, then the consequences could have been quite severe, which is poor.
You also need to be aware that the owner and his wife put live music on on Saturdays and Sundays.
She sings, and has a lovely voice and he plays keyboards, but not to the same standard. The volumes cranked up pretty high, overly so if you're seated in the inner area. To me, it seemed a bit self-indulgent of the owner, but I'm sure to others it'll be the highlight of the evening. Each to their own, but we left quicker than we would normally do and had...
