I discovered a hidden gem just behind the National Pantheon in Lisbon: Almadrava. The neighborhood had been missing a place that offered more than the obvious, well-prepared, flavorful food that also treats the eyes with the imposing view of the Pantheon’s dome, which almost feels as if it’s embracing you. The wine list steps off the beaten path and pairs perfectly with the idyllic setting. I started with a perfectly poured beer to go along with the long-fermented bread and the herb-and-pickle butter. I tried the clams, cooked to perfection and beautifully matched with an excellent white wine. To finish, I treated myself to the tuna steak, with a sauce that’s truly worthy of applause. From the minute that we sat down we felt welcomed, and were offered a variety of wines and traditional local tapas with culinary twists that made them stand out from an already amazing selection of Portuguese restaurants.
